Finally getting back into 40k as a dark angels player but most of my games will be at home vs my brother so I need to work on his army as well so I thought Id wipe the dust off of some of my old Chaos space marines (Made me cringe thinking I took some of these guys to a Tournament. they where bad!) the army list back then was 2 lash princes 7 oblits 3 squads of pms in rhinos 2 meltas each and 2 squads of khorne berzerkers in rhinos.

My idea for a 500 point army would be

Choas Khorne lord w/ pw mbs and plaspistol (dark vengeance model)

6 Khorne berserkers 1 Chain axe champ with power wep and mbs
Rhno with a dirge caster as dedicated

10 autogun cultists with a shotgun and heavy stubber (Once again dark vengeance)

5 Chaos space marines with a meltagun
rhino as dedicated
that's 499 total

My oblits demon princes and Plague marienes all need a lot of work before there ready for the table and most of my khorne berzerkers ended up broken so I have to try and salvage them as well but I would like to try and keep this army to mostly models I have (even if they need some work) or can convert/reequip easily

So any ideas on the 500 point list that's a good start for growing to 1k and then maybe 1500(don't forsee me going any higher anytime soon)

My advice is that at 500 points just against your brother this list is fine. a couple of little changes you could make to save points and make it more "competitive" but I wouldn't worry too much.

What I would do though is pick up the new traitor legions book and read up on that so going forward you know what style of army you want to go for Chaos finally have a few good very different ways to play depending on what legion you pick.

Right there with you on that one! Both Khorne and Nurgle have great themes/ fluff. Khorne armies are just a lot of fun to play! as long as you don't get too upset loosing. I find that with Khorne it's either a good game or your opponent manages to keep you out of reach with long range fire. Nurgle is looking really strong with the new Traitor legions book. tough hard to remove units with solid shooting.

Well I tried to go to lgs to get a look at the traitor legions book and the closest store on finder doesn't even sell 40k.. and I found out my back up store closed down double fail... so looks like the 500 point vs brother is all ima need for now since he's only opponent ill face anytime soon Still have another store about an hour away but not sure I want to trek out there yet. maybe when my 1k army is fully painted for a decent first impression)

Ahh That's a shame! Don't worry too much about not having many minis or the quality of the paint job. I'm terrible painter but will never play an unpainted model. to me they aren't a part of my army till they are painted and I've day dreamed about the models back story haha.
