If the iron warriors run a Helforged warpack, and nominates a defiler as the alpha, that means they can make a defiler a warlord right? On top of that if they roll iron within, the defiler now is a character with a 4++ and a FNP 4+ with IWND that is one hard to put down warlord wouldn't you agree?

Unfortunately, FnP doesn't apply to vehicles since FnP specifically says "takes a wound" and vehicles don't have wounds.

Also, IIRC, the warlord MUST be the character with the highest LD, and you pick one if you have a tie. The defiler has no LD value so therefore would count as having an LD 0

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the warpack getting a character is to snipe meltabimb characters and generally cause ID on aulti wound character model.

Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

FnP(4+) means nothing as feel no pain can only be taken against wounds.

Although 4++ and IWND are nice I don't think it will last that long: even with a chaos lord with a 3++ and FnP you still need to put him in a unit so that he doesn't get pulped. I just don't see it. :/

Beat me to it.

Though, it would be a neat gimmick with alpha legion

They changed the rules for 7e Warlords. Any model with the (Character) type can be your Warlord, and if your army has no models with the (Character) type, any one model in your army must be your Warlord.

Thus you could (for example) legally have a Leman Russ as your Warlord for a Genestealer Cult Insurrection if you used the Neophyte Cavalcade as your Core and didn't take any Characters/character upgrades.

On the most part, meh, the warlord traits aren't going to really help a defiler. On the other hand if your squishy warlord gets charged by, say, some SM bikers and then he tags in the defiler... It's too bad they are only T5 and they better hope someone has a melta bomb.

I have a Word Bearer list that uses a Defiler as a Warlord that I am working on building. 4 of the traits are actually quite funny on the Defiler, from giving it a random boon to turning it into a buffer or a ML 1 Psyker. The real reason for Word Bearers though is that Lost and the Damned is a core (so you have appropriate screening) and you want at least a few Malefic Psykers anyway to up your odds of getting Cursed Earth.

Spamming the Tzeentch power that bestows boons, or using the black crusade detachment to give the Def k ler boons is a hilarious idea!

IIRC all vehicles are considered to have LD10 (something about having absolute faith in their vehicle and crew) so that shouldn't be a problem. There aren't that many useful warlord traits for vehicles though. Even instant death doesn't really help much considering walkers are almost universally S10.

Sadly, Path to Glory only works on models with the Champion of Chaos rule. You can give it a single buff in a Grand Host detachment.
