I played a 1000 point game against a skitarii/admech guy and, due to some decent luck on my side and some poor tactical decisions on his part, my pretty casual list destroyed his list (I don't know how competitive his was, as I don't know much of the army) by bottom of turn 2. I can say with full certainty that my list was pretty crap, just a random hodgepodge of stuff, it was when I had just started guard and it lost 8 out of the 10 games I used it. Keep in mind this was like 8 months ago, as I had taken a long break from 40k.
I asked him about getting in a casual 1000-1500 game and he said he'd only play 1850 and only if he could bring a war convocation as that's "the only fair way to play against his army". Now, I'm somewhat familiar with the rules, they get like 500 points of free stuff with it I think, not sure if there's any other bonuses.
So my question is, how strong is that formation? Is it a bit overkill for a casual setting, do I need to bring a powerful list instead of something casual as I had planned? Are admech/skitarii really total crap if they don't use that formation, as he implied, or is this just him not being good with the army and/or wanting to steamroll me? I had planned on and told him I'd probably be bringing a deathwing/foot guard list, but I'm having second thoughts. And he's sort of the type to list tailor, so if I do switch things up to mech guard or use my DA instead he'll be poorly equipped to deal with it (hopefully he wouldn't get mad about me changing lists).
I will probably still play him either way, I hate to just say no to someone, but should I bring a more powerful list or, if convocation is cheese, bring my own special brand of cheddar (invis and rerollable 2+ or Azrael in a blob)? Should I just not play him? Or maybe even let him use convocation, tailor for me, let him win, so it's done and over with?
