So I'm watching all the GW painting tutorials and have noticed that Duncan (our lord and saviour) has been saying he's been undercoating some models using Retributor Armour and Leadbelcher. This is much different to just before I left the hobby before returning, as I thought you should undercoat with black or white.

Are the Citadel Spray paints intended for priming, much like the Chaos Black/Corax White cans are? Or am I confusing terms?

I'm aware that they're not the best quality paints out there, but they are the most convenient for me to get.

I don't think the colour cans are technically primers, but Duncan has said in one of the GW live streams that he primes his minis just using them and hasn't had any issues. He could easily have said that 'yes you do need to prime in chaos black or corax white first' in order to help sales, but he was honest in saying what he did.

Haven't tried them personally, but if i did, I wouldn't question using them straight on plastic. On resin/metal, I'd probably still use an actual primer first.

I've noticed that as well in his most recent videos. I've been thinking about trying a can of one of the colors without a primer on plastic to see how it goes. I'm thinking sealing the mini after your done might be more important if you do this.

I also prime using leadbelcher and Retributor armor.

The NEW GW sprays are both primer and first coat in 1. The OLD sprays (such as the Mournfang Brown or Incubi Darkness spray) are not primers. Take a look at the actual can and description of the spray before you buy it. Basically, the old, white designed spray cans are undercoats, and not primers.

I have had no issue with painting or washing over the spray cans. I like to do a light coat of spray then a thin layer of paint of the same name. Like Duncan says, if I end up having to do a touch up, the paint vs spray is noticeable.
