so the nearest lgs is a long way away and the largest table I have is 3 by 3 feet so I was wondering how I could play on the smaller table without affecting the gameplay too much ive thought about cutting move and ranges in half but wouldn't know what to do about templetes any ideas?

For templates and blasts/large blasts, you'd probably want to switch to rolling D3/D6 for hits instead. Templates would be D3 automatic hits in a certain range (say 3"). Blast would be roll to hit, D3 wounds on a hit. Large Blast would be roll to hit, D6 wounds on a hit.

Also, have you considered 6mm/15mm games (Epic or FoW size) instead of 28mm games?

I have enough trouble with painting 28mil any smaller scares me besides I already have a couple thousand points of 40k models(thought that's spread across 2 armys) and don't really have the money to start a whole new game especially if id need two armys one for me and one for brother as for the template ideas that could work I'll have to try it out sometime in the future

Just play Kill Team and small games? The balance is different at 750pts than at 2k, but the core rules generally work for both.
Just for example, starting 24" apart garuntees that you cannot get a first-turn charge except through special rules or unusual conditions.

The real issue comes in unit balance. Spending extra points on a gun because it has 96" range is less efficient when your board is only going to be 50" from corner to corner. Deep Strike also becomess less valuable, and high movement speeds become better.
However, things like blasts and templates really work the same.

So, yeah. Just play normal games, don't go overboard on points. Every meta is going to be different anyways, so don't sweat it.

Just to be clear: DO NOT change the rules for how templates work. That would hugely throw the game balance out of whack. Firstly, Template weapons generally hit a lot more than 3 enemies if the target unit is only 3" away, but getting lots of hits requires careful positioning. Second, the threat of templates forces horde players and anyone with large units to carefully place their models and spread out, potentially clogging up their lanes or robbing them of cover saves, or even forcing them to move through terrain. It's just a bad idea to completely throw out that mechanic in exchange for a random die roll.

Have never tried kill team but getting the rules in mail soon and its been so long since i actually played i forgot about how the threat of flamers are just as important as the flamers them selves

as for small games largest I would be able to field anytime soon would be 1k each and that would be pushing it a bit

biggest issue i see left now is deployment if i go for the 24 inch no mans land that gives you a 6inch deep deployment zone

if it helps at all my brother and i play chaos and dark angels (Dark vengeance models with a bunch of extra marines and a few rhinos/razorbacks mostly)
