Blood Angel Neophyte Undergoing Surgeries

Hello Dakka,

Blood Angel player here, who up until recently really felt the pain of being an assault army in 7th edition (I know you guys get me). Although not perfect, the recent Angel's Blade supplement really helped make playing BA more fun, as assault for my Sons of Sanguinius got a nice boon in several of the formations. Definitely feel like I can win some games now, which is a nice change of pace.

My dad plays Black Templars, and I'm having trouble helping him come up with a list that's fun, somewhat fluffy, but still viable. The main difficulty comes from the fact that Crusader squads just aren't able to be included in any of the Space Marine formations... are there some supplemental formations in addition to a CAD that you guys are using? Raptor Wing? Skyhammer Annihilation Force? I'm not an expert and am really looking for a tried and true vet to point me in the right direction.

Thanks for reading and for your help!

I have almost never seen BT used, like at all, so +1 for playing a cool and unique army.

However, I guess spamming landraider troops might be effective, LRs aren't too good ATM, however, if you take three that are all Obsec, and throwing big units of choppy crusader squads /might/ be effective.

Skyhammer is always good, I don't think it'll ever be bad really. One interesting formation is the ShadowStrike Kill team, I am pretty sure BT can take it, and its basically 2-4 scout units and 1-3 vanguard vet units, the vanguard vets can auto come in from reserves and charge the turn they do, and they won't scatter if they are within 9" of two scout units. It synergizes amazingly with Raven Guard, but it should be pretty great for BT too.

I don't know of much else to help, as I am just starting to build my raven guard army, but hopefully you find this somewhat helpful!

I'm a Black Templar player and still trying to figure it all out, but gummyofallbears is right in that you need Land Raiders - specifically Land Raider Crusaders because it lets you run 16-man Crusader Squads or 8-man Terminator Squads which are super good for assault units with Black Templars.

The only other thing you really need to do with a Black Templar Army (which does apply generically but is emphasised in Black Templars since - especially if you want to play them fluffy - they are an assault-y army) is to make sure you have a number of high-threat units, formations or detachments. Otherwise your pretty little Black Templar Assault Army is pretty useless.

Also - the Skyhammer Annihilation Force (Angels of Death Supplement) and 1st Company Task Force (Space Marine Codex) would be particularly useful for Black Templars. I've run the Skyhammer Annihilation Force and it's always done reasonably well (though I've lost the games I've used it in anyway due to other poor list choices).
