So I used to play 2-3 years ago, I had a small guard army which i still own, after telling a friend about this hobby we agreed to start/continue with it. He has chosen eldar. I am quite competitive and would like to win as much as possible versus him, but I can barely remember what is what, let alone the pros and cons of each unit, tank, platoon, even gun. I would like to know if there is a particular variation of the Leman Russ or unit that you would recommend.

The models i have currently are:
2 squads of guardsmen, both with sergeant with chainsword, flamer and grenade launcher and vox.
a company command squad - this has got a sniper rifle, lasgun and vox, plasma pistol and power sword, plasma gun and melta gun.
commissar Yarrick - got for fluff reasons as a friend played orks.
a squad of storm troopers? they are no longer in the codex?.
a hellhound with multimelta

Please tell me what I should get, and how to improve. I forgot how wild and scary this world is when you are just stepping in.
Thank you in advance for helping, I'm sorry I am such a noob

I haven't played guard in a few editions, but I think you're right to be looking at Russes. You may eventually need more infantry, but you could mechanize what you've got and focus on tanks and artillery. I can see buying and building quite a bit of armor in your future... Chimeras for your infantry, magnetized Russes to explore the options, and Wyverns for your backfield would be places to start.

Most of the russ varients are usefull depending on the rest of your army, so absolutely magnetize the barrels.

Stormtroopers are now Scions, they have fancy new models and names but they are the same thing.

Aleis and Macphail have already given you some good advice.

Welcome to the guard!  The IG is a fun army with endless possible themes.

However, the IG is a bit dated and sub-par relative to the top armies eldar, SM, Tau), etc.  Also, our available formations are not nearly as good as Eldar formations. You will have a good time with your eldar opponent as long as he agrees to bring casual lists.  If he insists on bringing competitive tourney style lists then you'll be wrecked.  I've had some great casual games against Eldar in 7th (and even won a few). I always lose tournament games against Eldar.

It sounds like you have enough for a grenade launcher platoon, Yarrick, a Hellhound, and a stormtrooper squad (which the rtlulebook also refers to as scions).  Just add a 10 trooper vet squad and you have a small starter CAD.  From there, just add units as you buy new models (my most effective units are wyverns and conscripts with a priest amd my most fun units are sentinels).

Good luck!

Or you could go down the route I have, not give a damn about what works and build the fluff first - I don't expect to win to many games lol, but it'll be fun

Currently working on a Hive World Imperial Guard 'Codex' - You can find the WIP here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/711392.page

I actually just started magnetizing so Ill help a bit, plus Ive played IG as my main army for like, 3 editions so Ill help as best as I can. Find some nice flat magnets, rare earth are pretty useful (I special ordered mine at home depot, 200 for 11.75). Then take a drill bit the same size as your magnet. Use a knife and score the center then put the bit in your hand and just twirl, the plastic drills easily and once you can fit the magnet in flat super glue it. Just make sure you line up polarities if you use 2 magnets or use metal on one end. As far as AM goes:
Stormtroopers are now Tempestus Scions, same unit basically though. I still use my old Kasrkin models as mine. Lemans are great especially with a tank commander or pask. The orders rock and getting preffered enemy on plasma cannons rocks more. Just dont put sponsons on any ordnance weapon ones as theyre useless that way. Veterans with melta guns in a chimers are a beast with the amount of special weapons they have. We unfortunately, in my opinion, have pretty bad air support. The valk is an ok transport but its guns aren't amazing ane while the vendetta is a beastly lascannon platform, it can only kill maybe 1 tank a turn if youre lucky. Finally, wyverns are the new beasts of the book, they are cheap and the artillery they rain down is downright absurd! 3 of those will almost always make their points back. Hope that helped and let me know if I can answer more!
