I am vey much in need of a place to store my miniatures, and I really don't want them just loose in a cardboard box. I would prefer a display case with glass all around to keep out the dust, but those are either very expensive or will take a trip to Ikea (90 to 100 miles away). So, I was wondering if anyone had found any good and/or interesting ways to build a DIY display case or repurpose some old furniture to use as a display case. I would prefer not to have the sides covered as that would keep people from being able to get a good look at them. Has anyone found any inexpensive options for something like this at Walmart, Target, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc.?

Thanks in advance!

This diy vid seems simple enough and I like that style display but really you could go about it so many different ways if you like glass or wood and glass or plexiglass or whatever suits you! Just gotta be fairly handy and carpentry oriented and it won't be a problem! http://www.italianhorses.net/tutorials/Display/dcase.htm
Good luck! Definitely inspiring me to attempt this shortly!

thanks for the quick response and idea! I may look further into this idea. The only issue I have is the number of models I have. Maybe i can look into a way of making this kind of project larger without weakening the overall structure.

Thanks again!

Honestly, just go to Ikea and grab a Detolf display cabinet. It will likely save you time and frustration over trying to bodge one together.

Sounds like his nearest IKEA is a 200 mile round-trip...that makes them even more expensive, etc.

However I have to imagine there is an alternative available or something that'll pop up on Amazon at some point. Another alternative is to find a shop which is off-loading their display shelves (if they're closing down, etc.)

Not sure about shipping options in the US or the expense of them, but I do know that IKEA do home delivery in the UK. The Detolf cabinet, as mentioned, is almost perfect for models being glass all around, with optional lighting and apparently it's easy to dust-proof. Have a look to see if they'll deliver to you as you may find it's more expensive to get all your materials together to make one than it would be just to pay a little shipping.
