It’s been over a year since we last brought you an update on TimeSplitters Rewind, a Crytek-approved fan reimagining of the popular first-person shooter trilogy.

However, amidst speculation over the future of the project following the closure of several of Crytek’s studios, developer Josh Nuttall has confirmed that “the game is still under development”, although a non-disclosure agreement has been signed by the team with regards to the release of new information and assets.

Nuttall was able to confirm that Rewind had undergone a number of programmatic and personnel changes behind the scenes in recent months, apparently brought on by Crytek’s direct involvement with the title. He explained: “We had to make changes to suit Crytek’s needs; a lot of the team didn’t agree with the changes and left.

TimeSplitters Rewind was born in 2012 after an unsuccessful fan petition to Crytek that urged the studio to resume development on the shelved TimeSplitters 4. Some of the more technically minded fans of the cult first-person shooter franchise soon decided to begin production on their own game based on the series, and TS Rewind was born. The team were subsequently given the go-ahead from Crytek, who also offered up official assets from the three games in the franchise as well as expert help.

TimeSplitters Rewind is a standalone game, originally built using the CryEngine but now believed to be running in Unreal Engine, which encompasses the most popular aspects from all three games in the original series. Although the developmental team are using the original assets as a reference point, they are recreating everything “from the ground up”. It is being developed for PC, with a later PS4 release also being planned.

This project has been going on for years now; I really wonder if it has the capability of (ironically) bringing one of the greatest FPS franchises of all time back to the present.

Anyone's thoughts on this? ... Does anyone even remember TimeSplitters here?

It'd be great to have this series back, I remember one of the later ones being a disappointment then them vanishing. The level builder was good, simple enough to use with enough depth to really mess around with it.

The last one I played was Future Perfect. While the campaign level designs weren't too great in hindsight, the writing certainly made up for it.

Like you said, the level builder was one of the greatest things about it, especially when you could use it to make some very interesting multiplayer maps to share. Also helped that there were so many weird and quirky weapons to mess around with.

Oh, and don't forget the soundtrack

The multiplayer on future perfect was probably my least favorite of the series; it lost some of the frantic pace and a lot of the level designs were trying to be too many things and failing (looking at you, siberia!)

But it was still multiple layers of fun above a lot of others before or since. People talk up the character design in games like Overwatch, but I have yet to see a playable school of fish in that game. or a giant hand, a snowman on a magic carpet, a man who thinks he's a robot, or...

Man did i love some of those characters.

Wow this is a blast from the past. I think i played either timesplitters 2 or 3. I remember it being a lot of fun. I only played a bit of it at friend's houses but man was it a fun game.

Man, I loved TimeSplitters, but this just stinks of Duke Nukem Forever.

I pray for all of us that you and I are proven wrong on that feeling...

My concern is the humour of the old games; I'm not convinced it would go down too well with the current gaming audience, either for being offensive or not funny at all. A lot of it went over my head as a kid, but now I look at it and still laugh, more now that I get some of the humour
