Hello I am pretty new to 40k (though not at all to 40k or fantasy lore) and I thought after all these years of just reading that it was time to make an army. I wanted to do something different and that fit me. So I chose the Finreht Highlanders of the Imperial Guard. Now I know I wont be able to play in tournaments and I dont have any GW shops around so that won't be a problem for me. I just want to play at the local game store and with some friends. So are there any miniatures or kits anyone on here would suggest? Any advice for getting into the hobby etc?
Also I'm new the the forum Hi!

You know you can create your own armies, and still play in a tournament or at a GW shop. They don't mind creativity, as long as you have a lasgun as a lasgun, and not calling it a lascannon. That is where you run into issues in tournaments.

Well if you are wanting Imperial Guard, they are making some starter sets now and have one for the Imperial Guard.

You can see if that is what fits what you are trying to make and go from there.

Thanks DarkKnights44 I didn't realize that. Yeah basically the Finreht Highlanders in 40k come from the planet Finreht and are (obviously) based on Scottish Highlanders so I want to try to maybe incorporate kilts and plaid, maybe bonnet for the headgear etc.

Welcome. Sounds like you have some ideas. There are a tn of alternate miniatures out there, so hopefully can find something.
Might try these places. You can bit lasgun arms for them or whatever.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

This is definitely what you're looking for.

Victrix has 28mm napoleonic highlanders,

(also available from warstore)

Googling seems to show them coming on the sprue with legs-and-torso separate from arms or head, so a simple weapon swap with cadian lasgun bits may be possible, but not sure if the scale works for that.
