Can I ask some generic airbrushing questions

1. What paint are you using? If you are using citadel how do you thin it?

2. If you are thinning paints what tools are you using? Eye droppers, syringes, Bottles? Where do you get those tools?

3. How is Vallejo Game Air? Is it worth it over mixing? Is there any other airbrush acrylics that are any good?

4. How is tamiya clear red or other clears? Is it a good place for a newb to start if I wanted to do preshading and then get good results?

5. Are there any good youtube channels or online tutorials to watch?

Thanks for any help

I guess that the thread will be pretty soon moved in to other section, but here are my 5 cents.

1. What paint are you using? If you are using citadel how do you thin it?

I use many brand of paints, personally If i have to use GW I thin them down with Vallejo Airbrush Flow Improver. GW ofcourse have their own airbrush brand, but I did not tried it since the Flow Improver can make almost any other acrylic to shoot like silk.

2. If you are thinning paints what tools are you using? Eye droppers, syringes, Bottles? Where do you get those tools?

I store all my thinners and homebrew thinners, water and stuff in bottles like this. It is all so easy to use :

3. How is Vallejo Game Air? Is it worth it over mixing? Is there any other airbrush acrylics that are any good?

Depends on what you are mixing. So far I have no problems with Vallejo Air, they are airbrush ready, but a thinner will come in handy. However I dont use thinner for this, I just pop the Flow Improver with little water an voala!

4. How is tamiya clear red or other clears? Is it a good place for a newb to start if I wanted to do preshading and then get good results?

I have both Tamiya and Mr. Hobby and those kind of paints are tottaly different than GW and Vallejo. The whole curve is different, because they are alcoholic based, but with their proper thinners they perform way better than Vallejo or any other Acrylic for Airbrush.

5. Are there any good youtube channels or online tutorials to watch?

Can't help you here. Just google airbrush tuttorials for minuatures. There should be tons of tuttorials and a quick search in Youtube send me to Uncle Atom and other popular Vlogers:

Damned near everything. My favourite paints to spray are Tamiya but they require a different thinner and have a limited colour range.

If I'm spraying citadel I use Vallejo Airbrush Thinner.

Vallejo thinner comes in a dropper bottle already. I usually just mix it in my paint cup.

For other stuff that doesn't come in dropper bottles (Enamel thinners, lacquer thinners, etc) I use a plastic eye dropper, I've been using the same one for ages which came with my airbrush, lol.

For paint itself that doesn't already come in a dropper bottle, I just use old crappy brushes to transfer it.

3. How is Vallejo Game Air? Is it worth it over mixing? Is there any other airbrush acrylics that are any good?
It's ok, it might be helpful when you're initially learning. I find I still have to thin Vallejo Air, using it unthinned is too thick for my liking, but it's much closer to the right consistency out of the bottle.

I've bought a handful of Vallejo Air when I first bought my airbrush, but since learning how to thin properly I haven't bought any more.

4. How is tamiya clear red or other clears? Is it a good place for a newb to start if I wanted to do preshading and then get good results?
If you're going to use Tamiya clears I recommend getting a bottle of Mr Color Levelling Thinner (specifically get the Levelling variety! The non-levelling variety dries too fast for Tamiya acrylics).

Spraying clears can be tricky on complicated shapes because you have to spray from a lot of different angles, but if you hit one area more times than another area it'll look "deeper", so it takes a bit of practice to get good results.

I used to watch buypainted when I started out for ideas, but I've kind of just developed my own style after that. I mostly look at youtube when I'm looking for specific techniques rather than looking for specific channels.

Most people airbrush miniatures in a way that I find too jarring, so I spend more time looking at historic military modellers rather than miniature painters, but that's just because they tend to hit on "the look" I prefer.

Not a youtube video, but this guy has some very good tips. They mostly boil down to: get to know your tools.

https://sites.google.com/site/donsairbrushtips/practice

Your combination of airbrush, compressor, hose, fittings, water trap, temperature, pressure, paint (range, colour, age, batch), thinner etc. is likely to be unique.

Practising on junk plastic (that you've primed) is a good way to experiment with different paints, thinners, retarders, mediums etc. until you get a good feel for how they work with your equipment.
