I can afford one or the other; either the Flyer, or the Battlewagon.
Between the two, which one is more useful, and why?

Battlewagon. Always helps to get more boyz krumpin! (that said, it really depends on what you already have. If you have a dozen Battlewagons already it might be worth a look at a flyer, for instance)

Yea you can run battlewagons pretty cheap as transports for your boyz. 4 rokkits and a reinforced ram is only 135 points. The armor 14 on the front makes it suprisingly durable, to the point where I would honestly run 2-3 in most lists. Its really hard to argue that fliers are more beneficial.
Orks fliers are damn fun though. I've killed many skitarii with my dakkajet.

Battle wagon. Easy choice. It can play multiple roles depending how you kit it. Do yourself a favour and magnetize it. Get 5 and field the Blitz Brigade. One of our top formations. There is various setup's and combinations with what they are transporting that it might be too time consuming to list em all but I'll toss in one example and let others toss in examples. Some are better then others and suspect very few setups will be more useless then an ork paper airplane.
15 tankbustas in a bw with a Kannon and 4 rokkit launchas is a fun way to vomit out 20 S8 AP3 shots.

Okay, I think the Battlewagon will do.
Anyone know where I can get a spare turret for my looted wagon?

From the battlewagon kit!!! the BW is just a transport, one big shoota/rokkit and is ok. In that kit there are a couple of turrets for big shootas and a bigger one for mek gunz or killkannon. Use some of them.

I've moved away from both the battlewagon and the dakkajet. But dakkajets are undoubtfully less useful than battlewagons.

Ork flyers are very cheap but not terribly effective. I take 2 in my lists just because they are so fun and look awesome but they have yet to do anything but kill a few marines before the game ends. Dakkajets just don't have enough shots and are still BS5 due to DFTS making fighters shoot at -1BS against ground targets. Even with a Waaagghh they just aren't capable of generating more than a few wounds.
The Blitz bomber is a bit more effective since it only scatters D6 on a large blast, but you have to fly over your opponent and you only get 2 shots which isn't terribly great.
Go for the battlewagon if you are feeling competitive, but throw a flyer in there if you like the way they look.

Battlewagons are more practical as getting Orks from A to B is one of the most important parts of Ork strategy and Battlewagons is probably the safest and yet still somewhat cost effective means of doing that (for non bikers/Meganobz). As for fun I think both can be fun but the Dakkajets are probably more enjoyable to use as a stand alone model. That being said my preferred 2000 point list has 3 Dakkajets and a Blitzbrigade (5 Battlewagons) so I might be a bit bias in my love of Battlewagons and Dakkajets. I'm just glad I got my jets back when the kit was $45 instead of now which GW threw in the bits for the mek flyer thingy and kicked up the price by like 15-20 dollars.

Battlewagons are better at winning games, and if you eventually end up with multiple you can use the Blitz Brigade (one of the better ork formations imo). Ork planes are only useful in the formations, and even then they still kind of suck because you need so many of them and they're so vulnerable to anti-air. If you want to convert/kitbash both can be a simple or as complex as you want.
