So I've been out of the game for a while, a bit because of time constraints with college, a bit because of a series of frustrating games. But I'm a chaod space marine player looking to go back into the game and now it seems every update I was wishing to happen happened all at once. Black legion, traitors hate, new models, even legion rules! It's fantastic but I have no idea where to start and what's worth the price or not, can anyone help me make sense of this?

While I don't know much about Chaos or how they play, just be aware that in about 5 months it is rumoured that 8th edition will come out and can invalidate everything that GW has done in the last year or two.

So buyer beware when buying books unless you are buying it for fluff.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

From what I read, keep in mind this may or may not be accurate, but traitors hate, I heard, was designed to possibly be effective for the next codex.

I would pick up a cheap copy of the current codex if you can as it's possible that an updated one will be out sometime this year.I would have no worries in picking up Traitors Hate or Traitor Legions as the way they have been released they should easily be usable with a new Chaos Codex, which is great! Maybe you should let the forum know what you have currently and then they can give some advice on what would be best for you to get playing.

Yeah what rice said a good start is what you have and what you feel like playing, Legion specific or not and if so what legion potentially

Facts are chains that bind perception and fetter truth. For a man can remake the world if he has a dream and no facts to cloud his mind.

What did you read that this was desined for the next codex? Also do you see what they did do suggest this true?

Get Traitor's Hate. For making all the Chaos stuff feel special again, it's the new Chaos Codex 3rd edition! It gives you options like crazy to designing amazing representations of all the Chaos Space Marine legions. More Psychic Powers, legion-specific warlord traits, relics, formations, and special rules. It just makes me SO happy!

And the best part of it is that a lot of these Legion rules are based on ground-pounding infantry!

You want the CSM codex (it's the same one it has been for several years now) plus Traitor Legions.

Forget the rest. everything you need will likely be in those two.

Traitor LEGIONS.

Traitor's hate is the crappy one that only has a fraction of the stuff.

It's confusing but you want the one with the thousand son on the cover, NOT the one with Kharn.

Wrath Of Magnus, Traitor's Hate: NO. all the important stuff in these is in TL.

Traitor Legions: YES. Contains all the rules for Thousand Sons from WoM, all the chaos psychic powers and IIRC all the formations present in TH, as well as unique stuff like the legion rules.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

OP here, glad to know traitors hate might just be worth it, it seems very tempting. But to be clear about my army, I've been out of the warhammer for about a year, I have the current (6th Ed) chaos space marine codex, a terminator lord, a sorceror, a dark apostle, a ton of chaos marones, a rhino, a Landraider, a forge fiend, 3 helbrutes/dreadnoughts, a terminator squad, a chosen squad, some chaos spawn, a demon prince, and quite a few cultists. I also have the black legion book, but sadly I have never actually used it.

Oh! And because people asked, I play my chaos marines as fallen angels.

The Black Legion book has been updated since then so that's redundant now sorry.

Your best bet would be Traitor Legions supplement. They don't unfortunately have a Fallen Angels section, but you can choose one of the other Legions that you want to represent your fallen. Using the Cypher data-slate as a reference Alpha Legion might be the best for you maybe.

Or just use Death Guard Legion for some of the most survivable troops out there.

1D4chan tactics is a nice place to start to get a rough understanding of what's on offer for a faction. The actual "analysis" is often completely wrong, but you can get the gist of what is in each of the books and most of the rules before you invest.

As the Scotsman said, you need the original seventh edition chaos codex, then get Traitor's Legion supplement, NOT Traitor's Hate supplement. They're two different books with most of the formations/rules they put in Traitor's Hate, also in Traitor Legions. None of the stuff that is in Traitors Legions is in Traitor's Hate.
I made the mistake of buying Traitors Hate.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples
