Can someone post a link or give me a breakdown into GW's massive EoT campaign back in 2003?
I'm curious as to how GW managed to organize the results of thousands upon thousands of individual battles into a unified campaign.

They created a web sight where they posted a bunch of fluff stuff, and a section that graphically illustrated the battle over a real time 8 week period. During the month, you could log in and post a battle report for Battle Fleet Gothic representing the battles in the space around the Cadia System/Eye of Terror, and games of 40K. It was pretty much totally player driven, where groups of players would plan battles on the GW Forums (Yes, GW actually had a forum back then). It was actually really, really cool and a great way to play 40K. It surpassed GW's expectations, but it was also apparently very GW work intensive, and is the reason why GW has not repeated such a thing since.
You can read about it here at the EoT Wiki.

Did you take part in it?
I can't find anything on the actual details and/or calculations and maps of the campaign.

I took part. Played 13th company and it was awesome. We had two big events at one of my LGS' and chaos won both times... as they did in the eventual campaign itself. Probably why GW ret-conned it as fast as humanly possible.

How did they turn individual battles into a result for the war?

Choas romped it and the whole thing got the retconia treatment. I was there man...plus I played Chaos. Funnily, I was using the same damned beserker models as I was using 2000. Update them already they look aweful.
|
Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you. |

So how did they calculate the results?

UPDATE: the archived Official Site for the Eye of Terror Campaign is deteriorating and is less than fully functional. If you want that site's info, good luck getting it while you can.
Otherwise use the other links provided above and the wikis.

For quite a while now I've been wanting to organise a big community story arc for 40k, much like the EoT campaign but obviously would be much more low-key as it would only really be Dakka (and maybe Reddit) communities. Wasn't really sure on what kind of reception the idea would receive though, as it would require at least a decent number of regular players/games in order to be decent fun for everyone.

The main issue with the EoT campaign was that they ran it in the earliest days of popular internet. They had far too few oversight methods to cover the phoned or emailed or written-in results from random shops/clubs etc. No way to verify the games had been played, or played properly.
This mean the results were never going to be trustworthy.
Also, the main gripe people had was that GW stated the world-wide result would determine the next move in the fluff...and then they just ignored this completely when Chaos won a rather large amount of the games/percentages, etc.
It was a very cool idea...poorly executed. Also this is where some serious ret-conning started, as some major characters were killed off and then magically reappeared a month or two later with little to no explanation. I think GW simply bit off more than they could chew and tried to backtrack.
The highlight for me was the small special army lists which accompanied the EoT codex --- there was a small codex dedicated to the campaign.
This was also, I believe near the introduction of the Wulfen which appeared for the first time, the introduction of Salamanders as an actual consistent chapter (I believe). You also had things like the Ulthwe Strike Force, and some Renegade/Militia lists for Chaos, etc.

That campaign was amazing fun. Still have my eye of terror codex. If I remember correctly, GW controlled the input by weighting the games differently. A victory submitted by an official GW source counted more than an independent submission. You could also only enter 3 games a day.

Orkz is never beaten in battle. If we win, we win. If we did, we did fighting so it don't count. If we legz it, we just come back for annuver go, see? |
