I like Space Marines in 40K but wasn't so fond of the SM ships in BFG. Asthetically i was drawn more to the older ships of the Imperial Navy. And even having my customized Navy fleet double for my Space Marines, i had to often explain they were in fact Imperial, not Chaos.

As much as i liked my fleet i still wasn't quite satisfied. Considering the success of my scratch-built Ra'Millies-class Star Fort at Games Day Canada 2003, i've been thinking of doing more.

Now i'm going to do what i should have done years ago. I'm going to scratch build an entire Space Marine Fleet for my Tomb Kings Legion. Using cardboard to make a Pyramid for the core of my Ra'Millies (using the WarHammer Fantasy Terrain book as my guide), i added sections of plastic mesh (the kind for knitting) cut to fit the 4 triangular sides and the square base, with regular Elmers glue. Onto that i added the plastic & metal bits for the Fort'sweapons batteries, hangars and turrets. Two (2) large bases had to be altered to fit together, one glued to the base of the Fort. Covered the whole model with black primer. When dry adding the gold & red for details, matching my Legion.

Now i have a good stockipile of cardboard (various grades & thicknesses) as well as plenty of styrofoam left over from another project.

I will be acquiring more plastic mesh & glue tomorrow. I will be making pyramid cores; some from styrofoam and others from cardboard.

I have not made any SM ships yet so i'm not sure about their sizes. I've looked online and here is what i have found:

Ramillies Star Fort (from memory; mine was built to size based on published materials, but it has been in storage for almost a decade and would take at least a day or two at my parents' house to find)
