Subject: Red Templars Reimagined- Sample marine painted 2/2
Well, here goes my latest attempt at a blog. This thread is going to document my progress in creating an army of the Red Templars chapter. Very little official fluff exists for this chapter, so I’ll be taking a few liberties with how I interpret the tidbits that have been published already, and making my own modifications.
They have a basic but appealing colour scheme (IMO), and the vagueness of the fluff (basically all there is is that they're apparently good at seek-and-destroy operations) means that force composition can be fairly flexible- I don’t feel particularly hamstrung having to include certain troop types. I’ll attempt to write a bit more about the fluff in a later post, but I have sketched a rough outline, which is as follows:
• Imperial Fists successors
• Feudal-world homeworld
• Close ties with the Ecclesiarchy and some Ordo Hereticus Inquisitors (suspiciously so..?)
• Worship Emperor as a god
• Particularly vicious hatred for the witch/heretic/traitor
• Veneration of older armour marks- almost entire chapter still fitted out in MKIII/MKIV armour (huge number of suits inherited upon founding), as this armour comes from a time when the God-emperor walked among mankind.
The final point is basically due to personal aesthetic preference- it’s my favourite armour mark, and Prospero made it possible to build an army in that style! As well as this, my other practical concerns are easily addressed. Thanks to their symbol being a fleur-de-lys, transfers for their shoulder pads are easy to come by. In the case of vehicles, I’ll pick up an immolator and press-mould the door decorations.
Unfortunately, no pics so far (nothing really to show), I’ve just been assembling the troops from a Prospero box. Once I’ve got everything assembled (should be by this weekend), I’ll load up the first pics.

Interested to see where you take this i love it when people pick a background throwaway comment and give it a ton of expanding fluff
Any ideas on direction? For me they sound like Black Templars that are suspiciously close to being Khornate. Bathing in the blood of their enemies or something like that
Ynneadwraith: I'm not going with savage close combat monsters (maybe I would have if I could afford enough despoiler squads..). Lots of flamers and meltas for purging heretics, a land raider redeemer as the centrepiece of the army, and plenty of holy bolter fire.
Turtles: I hope I can do them justice! I intend to do a grittier version of the pre-heresy thousand sons basically. Metallic red, with silver or bronze trim, and plenty of scuff marks.
Anyhow, here's a shot of my assembly so far, still waiting onr a land raider and razorback to arrive in the post:
Ok, not much progress to show, but progress nonetheless! I've primed and basecoated all of the tactical marines. Grey primer with a VMA signal red basecoat. It's a fairly bright metallic red, so I'll hit it with a wash or two.
Well, I got around to painting up one marine as a bit of a test. Unfortunately the fleur-de-lys transfers I got are marginally too big, but I'm not sure that it's really a problem.
Anyhow, would love to know your thoughts on this scheme (yes, I can't paint eyes... )

A pity about the eyes lenses, the paint scheme is very, very cool! Love the metallic red! The fleur-de-lys doesn't look too big either, it looks rather good in there. I'd only suggest at least paint a black circle at the tip of the barrel and maybe painting the targeting laser above it yellow, the same as the eye lenses. It'd be a nice spot color amongst the whole thing.
Overall, I say:

For the eyes, I've found that either a Nuln Oil or Reikland Fleshshade wash dabbed into the eye sockets helps. It gives it a little dark ring around the outside which looks much more natural, and also gives it the slightly glossy look of it being a glass-like viewport.
Have you seen the video from our Lord and Saviour, Duncan, Herald of the Two Thin Coats? It may help

TheDraconicLord: Thanks so much for that video! I'll give the lenses another go tonight when I get home from work, and I drilled the barrel after taking pics (it was only then that I remembered..).
Ynneadwraith: Thanks for the tip. I'll try to do a more traditional 'lens' style with paint (I've never managed to pull it off in my life), so if/when that fails, or even if it succeeds, I think I might give them a flesh wash.
I did some other work yesterday, but it doesn't make for interesting photos. Basically I dry brushed and did the first wash on about 30 marines.
By the way, I stole the red recipe from a poster who used it for his Word Bearers on another forum, so I can't claim credit. I'll post a link if anyone wants the exact recipe?
