i have recently restarted the hobby and have got the imperial guard start collecting set, i have magnetized the leman russ' guns and built the lascannon and squad including voxcaster and the various special weapons i will utilise for whatever job i need them to do. My problem is the Officio Prefectus Commissar, i have reserved the codex from GW as they sold the last one just as i entered the store, what i would like to know is the point cost of the commissar with bolt pistol and point cost with plasma pistol. I know that the plasma pistol is much stronger and has higher AP, i know they have the same range but i want to know point cost.

A bolt pistol costs nothing. A plasma pistol will cost you three flamers. On a regular commissar I probably wouldn't. BS4 is nice, but 1W and only a 5+ is not. Given how important they are to their squad (particularly combined squads), the plasma pistol is a liability. If you intend on running him as a lord commissar it could work.

Plasma pistols are almost never worth taking, especially not on one wound models with a poor save. The last thing you want is your Commissar to kill himself with an unlucky Gets Hot! roll of 1, which you'll be unlikely to save with only a 5+ armour save.
