Dear friends, users of this forum, I am somewhat indecisive about which army to choose me because all I like at a visual level, I would like you to recommend me a competent army that is Top right now and that is able to win good games, I have recommended several but not If you will know any more, those who have recommended me are Space Mariens of Chaos, TAU or Necrons I thank for advice and explanations about the different armies.

Thank you

I'm not massively experienced (read: 2 games played) so maybe I'm not the best person to ask, but I do browse these forums quite a bit and the consensus seems to be, that if all you want to do is win, then play Eldar. That said, if all you want to do is win, people won't like playing with you much, so try to avoid that mentality. My advice? Pick an army you think you'll enjoy painting and start small. If you decide to change your mind later, it's a lot easier to move onto something else if your investment is small. Pro-tip: Space Marine's make a great army for beginners as they have the greatest range of models & versatility & the hobby is more or less built around them.

My advise is to find an army that matches your play style. Cool looking minis are one thing, but if you like the idea of rushing your army forward and stabbing your opponent in the face, then some armies are not really going to satisfy you. Same if you like the idea of sitting back and hamming your opponent with big guns. For me, finding an army that plays to your style makes the game more fun.

So I would have to ask, when you think about playing the game, what kind of play style excites you the most? Do you like the idea of a Close Combat army, a shooting army, or somethign in between? Do you like the idea of really tough and hard to kill guys, a massive hoard of troops, or somewhere in the middle?

Hey JuanBta. Sounds like you want to play competitively. The really "top" armies right now are often a mix of multiple factions. Here's a brief snapshot of the current world:

(If you don't recognize some of these terms you're going to need to research them.)

- Space Marines; Gladius + Librarius Conclave
- Chaos Space Marines; Cabalstar with Magnus
- Tau+Eldar = TauDar

These are really some of the absolute top dogs. However, if you're playing competitively, note that you'll only want to play against others that are also in the game to play competitively. The stuff I just listed is SO powerful that without a suitably powerful opponent, it will play itself out, and you'll hardly need to think or plan, since the army will just win on its own. Also note that at this level of play, what is "top" can suddenly and violently change depending on new releases. What's the best stuff today may not be the best stuff half a year from now, so you'll burn through a lot of money to buy this, and a lot of time to paint it, and then maybe end up dropping it to switch for the new "most powerful" stuff.

As such, as a new player, I would STRONGLY recommend that you play with whatever looks cool to you first, and not worry about it being able to win games. Go have fun losing some games. There's so many interesting and fun things to do at the lower tier that you don't want to skip by just going for the strong stuff.

First, welcome to Dakka.

Competitiveness comes and goes. Models you like last forever.

Unless you are playing tournament level lists, you can make most any army work. Some, admittedly, take more work then others. When choosing an army, find one with a look and feel that you like. You are going to be investing a lot of time and money to field them. So do some research and figure out what you like, and what you want to get out of them. This can be looks, play style, or fluff. But find the hook that drives you, and work from there.

SM Deathstars, Eldar, and Tau are the top three right now.

Daemons, Eldar, Space Wolves or Genestealer Cults. Possibly Sisters of Battle if you're wealthy. Nobody likes a Tau player so don't become one.

There is a lot of Tau hate, but on the upside you get to feast on the non-Tau player tears and watch them make butt hurt threads all the time. So that's a perk.

... until somebody Sweeps your entire army with a Screamerstar and turns your Stormsurge into a Spawn.

Go Daemons!

Be aware that if you're just looking to have whatever the current most powerful army that it'll only stay the most powerful for a certain amount of time. We're currently expecting a new edition of the rules to be coming out later this year which will likely mess with the current power ratings of armies, and even then every time a new codex drops the meta might change. Just from my own personal experience, the last Dark Angels codex drop completely changed things, our bikes are now second only to Eldar scatterbikes. While I haven't been in the game long it's rather obvious that the power fluctuates drastically, what's top right now probably won't be in a year or two.

As others have said, pick an army that you actually like and work from there, but if you really must go for most powerful your best bets are grav spam space marines running a gladius or eldar scatterbikes and wraithknights.

This is what you are looking for if you want to know what top tier army you would want to play, its a semi complete list of all the tournament proven top tier armies -> http://bloodofkittens.com/7th-edition-army-list-compendium/
Just browse trough the lists, watch some battle reports and choose one that you like the aesthetics and the play style of.

However be prepared to sell, buy and paint new additions to your army fast since the meta can change quite a bit and you need to keep up with it.
