This. A thousand times this.

Just ask someone if they want to play a game, also don't be a creep about it and ask someone in a LGS. Not in the middle of the street in the dead of the night.

It might also be a good idea to discuss, time, place, point total and competitiveness.

If you want to steer the type of game towards something you prefer, you can also use a more specific question:
Hi, my name is ___, I'm looking for someone to play a 1.5Kpts casual game of 40K, are you interested?

You introduce yourself and ask them if they're up for a game.

Hardly rocket surgery...

Don't imagine it to be more complex or convoluted than it actually is.

To expand though, i always ask a local person if they want to play and tell them what armies I have. If they agree, I then talk about points location and such. I have a custom table at home, but I find suggesting a flgs for our first encounter is more comforting to both parties, just converse and set up a game that will make everyone comfortable. Then you just have to worry about personalities not meshing

"Hey amigo! You looking for a game?"

I know it can be intimidating in a new setting, and some players can be cold or even hostile (at the Battle Bunker in Chicago before it closed down, I got a pretty severe cold shoulder from the first several players I talked to, but at the Deer Grove GW, I've never had a problem; at my local stores we usually go out of our way to get new guys a game) but the direct approach is usally the way to the best results.

Normally I go with "Sup bitch. Welcome to Thunder Dome. Let's do this." and then I normally throw my dice bag at their feet and slap them wildly across the face...crush a can of energy drink against my forehead, etc.

Pretty common.

It's not so much the question is how to get into a fluid social scenario to ask. Start a conversation about the hobby. How did they blend a particular cape, or about a unique piece of theirs, or how their army works, etc.

You can find out a lot about a person from a closed ended direct question. It forces a person to answer without being rude, and opens further opportunity for discussion. You can move to more open ended questions and even read if you want to play with the person. By the end of the open discussion asking will seem fluid and natural.

P.S. Same rules apply to meeting prospective partners or general passerbys. Telling someone they have a nice jacket and asking where it's from for example. This can make your day more interesting just by interacting with random people in a more meaningful way than observing while waiting.

"Hey . Get your worthless army on the table now so I can crush you like the you are."

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Just start throwing your models at them one at a time to get their attention. When they look at you wave, hold up your dice bag and point at it while smiling.

Just don't use the pointy metal ones unless you REALLY can't get their attention.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Ideally, you should do this with your metaphorical "dice bag" if you are properly equipped.

It usually involves a bottle of chloroform and a locked room that can only be opened by rolling dice for a few hours.

Reading this just made my day.
I feel like more of a lower tier than completely awkward after reading some of these replies.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

Hi guys, I'm looking for a few more local games.
Normally I play 1500pt, fully painted, no forgeworld, single foc, tyranids but I'm happy for you to bring whatever you want.
I'm free most nights and all day.
I'm happy to drive and will even pick you up and drop you home, the gas is on me.
Did I mention that the beer's on me too?
I'll bring my hot twin sisters as my stake, do with them as you will.

If yoiu can't agree on a point total and/or competitiveness style, then shake their hand and thank them any way.

In my case, it's normally arranged via social media. Many groups/clubs/etc. have a facebook group so it's like

<my name>
Anyone want a game this Saturday? <insert points> points, I play <insert army here> <optional: style of play casual/competitive>

Someone will reply, so then you can meet up and introduce yourself then.

I'm apart of a few facebook groups in my city (and part of town), so it's pretty easy to meet new people and scheduled games.

At the gamestore, if I'm ever gaming next to some people playing 40k, I just introduce myself and exchange some words. Over time, you just meet more people, and it all starts to work.

Just saunter into your local games store with your army mag under your arm, size up your competition and then declare yourself with a colourful title. Advise them that their days are numbered and unless they can beat you in a game of 40k, the local community centre will be torn down to build a new office building!

Wait for some other schmuck to play them first if its not immediately obvious if they're TFG or not. If they're not ask away!
