I've been out of the hobby for a few years now, and I'm feeling the itch to come back. I'm going to start slow with Necrons, and was wondering, how many of you use GW paint, and if not, what paint do you use that's reasonably priced. I'm going to be getting an entry level airbrush too, and I've never used GW paints with one.

All ranges have their good and poor paints. personally I use AP, Vallejo, GW and P3, and they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

If you're doing Necrons, and want to do the job quickly, Army Painter's Gunmetal primer is terrific, as is the regular version. (Some of their paints are awful though).

I use Vallejo, MIG, and cheap craft paints.

I use Vallejo because they're cheaper than Citadel and come in dropper bottles which I prefer. They have a tendency to separate though, so I put a mixer ball in each pot.

Vallejo Game Color range is not suitable for airbrush since they contain a fast drying additive. Some of the reds and yellows in the Model Color range contain cadmium and shouldn't be sprayed either.

The Game Air and Model Air range exist, though, and I recommend you get some of those. They are pre-thinned which helps when you're learning to airbrush, and they don't contain any cadmium, which helps when you're trying to not die early.

Splattered With Acrylic Paint

I use GW, Vallejo and I recently got the full set from Minitaire which are also very nice paints.

GW is pretty much as advertised if a little pricey.

Vallejo is reasonable but are both good a bad with the eye-droppers.

My backup/secret weapon is "medium body" artist paints from Liquitex.
Best family of products I have used bar-none.
They have a huge amount of their paint into rattle-cans so a base-coat can go on very nice.
When you start playing with their flo-aid and their acrylic inks it gets extra fancy.
(Hint: the "inks" with flo-aid become very quickly "shade" like GW).
Plus the volume of paint to price is FAR cheaper for better pigment product.

I have little experience with Army Painter but they are a good alternative.

I have Vallejo, GW, and Reaper, all have their good and bad's. Best way is figure out how much you are willing to spend, and what is available locally around your or if you are wanting to order online.

I haven't used them yet, but my brother has used Creatix he got at hobby lobby, he has some great looking figures, and I looked a set of basic colors that can be used in a airbrush, 20 bucks at hobby lobby.

So lots of options, and lots of opinions, just go with what you feel is best, it won't be wrong.

Tamiya makes for awesome clear coat colors. I use GW paints for most of my stuff, but Tamiya over Metallics for my Iron Man army.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I use GW almost exclusively. GW paints are all pretty expensive, but the regular non-spray paints are really good quality for the most part so it's worth a little extra. For primer I've realized that $16 per rattlecan of black spray is unnecessary, and I've started using Rustoleum American Accents black primer, which is only $4 a can at Walmart. I've also been using Vallejo black because last time I ran out of black my FLGS was out of GW Abaddon Black. It's just as good if not better than GW.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700
