Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I have quite a bit of Imperial stuff that I want to convert to chaos, mostly IG tanks and more recently Deathwatch, but the Imperial details (Imperial eagle, Inquisition crest, etc.) give away the fact that they are Imperial. What I want to do is give the effect that the renegade forces took the Imperial equipment, slashed the crests and ordained the equipment with chaos sigils.

So what's the best way to slash these Imperial insignia, specifically (atm) for Deathwatch Inquisition shoulder pads? I have a few ideas: use a craft knife to make the cuts, use a saw to make the cuts or use a hot wire to melt a groove into the pad. So far I have found sawing is faster and more consistent than a craft knife but a saw gives a very clean cut rather than a groove slashed across by a renegade blade, I found that a craft knife is much slower and a lot easier to mess up than a saw. So far I haven't tried a hot wire.

I am leaning towards creating the grooves with a saw then roughing up with a knife and a file. Does anyone have any better suggestions?

An old soldering iron makes some good marks, I use it for battle damage on tanks. I would imagine it would make it look like they defaced it with a cutting torch or the like. just my 2cents.

I only have the one soldering iron :/
Think I could get the same results with a heated nail?

With mine, I've been doing them in bronze and using nihilak oxide to give it a corrupted/corroded/cursed look..

The forgeworld model masterclass books recommend a dremel with a small grinding bit to mark them.
