My friend is getting really frustrated with the cost of beginning playing 40K with Orks. Do you guys know of any place to find cheap Ork models besides eBay? He has a Start Collecting Orks! box. As for me, I picked up a Start Collecting Imperial guard! box and am not sure what to buy next. Any advice?

Ebay is generally quite cheap comparatively. If you haven't been, try playing a few "kill team" games with just a few models as you get into it. Don't try and jump in all at once and get to like 1000 points.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Orkz unfortunately are one of the more pricey armies.

For you, Wyverns and veteran squads with meltas will help a lot. I also like throwing a Banewolf at the the enemy as it generally gets a 'arrrggghhhh run away...' response. Problem is it will probably get glanced to death on the way if you don't have much cover.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Ebay's your friend with both of these. For orks in particular, keep an eye out for stuff from the 5th ed starter set – it's a good way of boosting your boyz numbers without dropping loads of cash. The poses are less varied and dynamic than the multi-part boyz, but with some judicious application of minor conversions, using the spare bits from the boys kits, and mixing them in units with the muilti-part boyz, they do a perfectly good job.

Here's a mob of Goff boyz where I did exactly what I just mentioned. That boss in the background is an AoBR body and head with the big choppa arms left over from the Nobz kit. I'd say the easiest, quickest and most effective things to change about the AoBR boyz are the angles of the choppa arms and heads; just requires a bit of cutting, pinning and greenstuff.

Orks are very easy to work with, converting and/or scratch building --- for example, for my Squiggoths, I use Garden Ornament Tortoises with plasticard howdahs (~£13 for each Squiggoth total). In addition there's ebay for Ork models that people don't want anymore (quite common these days unfortunately). You can scratch build quite a lot for Orks.

Guard is a little harder to do cheaply but not impossible, you can do 1/48 scale historical vehicles for count-as guard vehicles (as long as you don't want to game a GW store etc.) You can also find alternate infantry models more cheaply at suppliers such as Puppetswar, Anvil Industries or Dreamforge etc.
