The model normally comes on a 30mm base. I have to use either a 25mm or 50mm for the effect I want. Which is more acceptable?
25mm
50mm
Rule of Cool: Either is fine so long as the end result looks great!
Rule of Fool: I would refuse to play you unless it was on a 30mm base.

So, I've got a pretty cool idea for a scenic base for some miniatures. Unfortunately, the only bases I have that will work for the concept (and the only ones the company in question makes) are either 25mm or 50mm. The model in question is normally mounted on a 30mm base.

So what do you think is MORE acceptable? 25mm or 50mm?

(No matter how it shakes out, I will always be willing to treat the model as being on a 30mm base for rules purposes.)

25mm would be preferred, since it's much closer to the standard size. Even if you're willing to do the counts-as-30mm thing it's much easier to figure out that approximation when you only have to make minor adjustments.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

You can get base extensions that turn 25 into 32mm. Work pretty well.

+1 to this suggestion. I've used these 25 mm to 32 mm base extensions personally and they work very well.

It also accomplishes keeping the minis on very close approximations to their standard 30 mm bases without being too small or worry over someone accusing you of modeling for advantage by using smaller bases than what the minis are normally supplied with.

Hope that helps.

Take it easy.

Rule of cool is one thing, but modelling for advantage is another.
I would say get the base size they come with.

I would be fine with a slightly different base size. Which one I would go for would depend on the model in question. If it is MEQ go for the 25s.

What are the models you have in mind? I am a firm believer that it is more important for the base to"fit" the model rather than being on the base it came with.
That is why all my Jetbikes are models on the 60x35mm oval bases instead of the 32mm flight base.

It might help if we knew what models you have in mind. 25mm might be too small, 50mm might be too big. You have to decided which is closest, or which you are ok with. For example, I cannot stand when a model's base is too big compared to the model, like the Tzeentch Chariot. So mine is on the rectangle base that is used to come will instead. Some day, I might put it on an smaller oval, but we'll see. Likewise, I cannot stand it when GW puts T3 1W minis on 32mm like they are doing with all the lesser Daemons. All my lesser Daemons will remain on the 25mm, thank you.

However, scenic bases might make a bit of extra base look good, in which case, going with the 50mm could work.

My Tataros Termies are on 32mm
The 40mm is WAY too big for them
