What constitutes a model being one or another type of a configuration typically?

I'm a new player and setting up most of my models to be able to swap weapons and loadouts, and was trying to figure out what makes a model specificly that type.

example : Sydonian dragoon/Ironstrider ballistarii

what seperates these two are not just the weapons, but some things that can't be interchanged, like one has the left leg forward, the other the right leg. also the unit has a different head described in the assembly.

would i be able to legitimately swap between using it as a dragoon and ballistarii simply by switching the weapons loadouts and claiming it to be one or the other. or would i have to magnetize the head and possibly somehow the legs since they are configured different?

Only the weapons would need altering. Legs, heads, accessories, etc don't mean anything. And if they do to some people I don't want to play against that type of player. Honestly if it were me I wouldn't care if you played them as either so long as I knew before the game what they were.

Yeah, i was hoping that is how most players felt, right now i just play with my kids (i wanted to play as a kid but the rules were too advanced. But now i can teach my own), and my brother, so it wouldn't be an issue. But if we went up to the local shop to do a couple of battles, i just wanted to get a consensus on how people rate it since the books are kinda vague.

Generally speaking weapons is the primary thing people look at when it comes to WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) gaming - which is what Warhammer is.

Upgrades on models are sometimes represented in the kits and sometimes not; but they are often tiny details like grenades or medals and most people do not notice them in games. So in battle its not a requirment (its also generally impractical because the myriad of upgrades would mean you'd need thousands of models)

So weapons are where it is mostly. Of course some duel kits have more parts so if a model has a very distinct look then that would be expected (its not one leg forward or back but more that the plastic kit would have two different looking legs entirely).

Most players are happy so long as what you put on the table is clear; and isn't very similar to something else delibratly (ergo confusing causing). In addition a good written army list is a must; they aren't hard to write and help you and your opponent keep track of your units stats and upgrades during a battle.
