Hi everyone!

I recently made the jump to 40k after 20 years of playing WFB because I fancied a new set of challenges. My brother and long-time gaming partner has also made the jump. He likes to focus on the gaming side of the hobby, racking up victory at all costs, and settling for some hasty drybrushing to get his troops onto the field ASAP.

I on the other hand love the modelling and painting side of the hobby, and I had some clear objectives going in: First, I wanted an army where every (yes, EVERY) model was converted or kitbashed. Second, I wanted an unusual colour scheme, something to stand out from the generic GW schemes. Third, I wanted to put some real effort into my bases, which I tend to neglect and leave a flat colour.

So... Da Big Purplez was born! Orks seemed a natural choice because of their ramshackle appearance, and the plethora of kitbashing opportunities the Age of Sigmar models give me, as well the extensive historical range of Orks themselves. It helps too that my armies are always howling mobs of bloodthirsty savages (while my brother prefers the cold, heartless gunline army approach).

I bought a few kits together to give me some options. I started with the Start Collecting Ork box, an Ironjaws Megaboss, and some IronJawz Ardboyz. I immediately knew that Gork and Mork approved of my plan when I found not one, but TWO Deff Dreads in my Start Collecting box! I decided to repay their favour by painting my Warboss first.

I used the small sidearms from the Deff Dread to augment the Megaboss's axe, and swapped the free hand for a Deff Dread Power Claw. The sizes match up perfectly. I swapped the shoulder-plate from the Megaboss with another gun that I believe came from a Skitarii kit (my bit box is awesome) and popped a little Deff Dread standard on his back.

The base was made using a Temple Floor rolling pin and some clay - I LOVE this effect. I added a cork platform with a second floor, then the usual stones, skulls, tufts... and a decapitated dragon. This dead dragon head is made of lead, and was given to me by a grizzled old wargamer in 1997, who told me to use it on something special. 20 years later, I decided now was the time!

The colour scheme borrows from several Youtube offerings. From the Warhammer TV channel, I borrowed the Genestealer flesh scheme for my purple skin. From Dr Faust's Painting Clinic I borrowed the technique for the corroded iron plates (which involves liquid latex and lots of stippling!

I'm thrilled with my Warboss. I don't have a name for him yet, I'm still working on my Orkish jargon - suggestions are welcomed! I've now got a lot of kitbashing to do and I want to keep updating this blog with my progress. I've spent many years reading this forum as an anonymous guest, and I've picked up modelling tips, conversion ideas, army lists and tactica. Now I want to contribute, and hopefully give some more anonymous guests (and established users of course!) a flash of inspiration in return.

Thanks for reading!

P.S. First ever forum post!

Lookin' good ...I thought that model would work just as well in 40k as in AoS, and it does! ...looks like he could be used with a few different loadouts too, so he'd be pretty versatile...'eavy armour or mega armour, twin-linked shoota or kombi-rokkit launcha, big choppa or power klaw, so it's a triumph of both form and function!

I like the purple skin, works really well...is that meant to actually be his skin colour though, or is it more of an all-over warpaint? - I know orks from the deffskullz klan have been known to paint themselves blue from head to toe for luck (blue being a lucky colour for orks)...purple is the "sneaky" colour, and with the orks collective latent psychic powers, purple armour, etc, might as well be stealth camouflage

...so, what I see character-wise from your warboss...I'd say he's probably a deffskull at heart, and probably more a follower of Mork than Gork - he's probably a bit paranoid, or at least superstitious, with the lucky blue armour an all...but also a fairly kunnin', sneaky old git, with gear ready for anything, and it's clear he's lived through his share of good fights, judging by all the trophies on his shoulder/around his neck, so it's clear he knows what he's doing

...or of course, he could've just come from a planet with a weird atmosphere, which made his skin purple, and he could just be wearing armour made from scrap panels of a wrecked tempestus scions taurox or something, and never bothered to repaint it from it's original blue...who knows

in any case, he looks like a great ork character - good luck with the rest of the army!

...it's good to be green!
