Just started playing 30k after playing 40k for a couple of years.

Can a legion veteran squad of 10 split into two combat squads?

Nope. There is no "Combat Squad" rule in 30K for Legions. You get 10-20 models in a Legion Tactical Squad, and all of them are armed exactly the same except for the Sergent (if you want him to be). Legion Support Squads are 5-10 models, but most can't fill the two Compulsory Troops choices. You Legion and/or RoW will dictate that.

Legions play akin to Eldar. Specialized units, almost all with the same weapons on each model

Tamwulf, vylkas was referring to Legion Veteran Tactical Squads, not Legion Tactical Squads.

Those come in squads of 5 - 10 models and can be equipped like 40k Tactical Squads.

That doesn't change the answer to the question, though; they don't get the Combat Squads rule, so if you take a squad of 10, it has to stay a squad of 10. They're also Elites, so you don't get as many of them (unless you're using the Pride of the Legion Rite of War).
