As it says in the title, what happened to Malcador? I can't say I've ever read anything about him. What made me think about him was when the Cadia books mentioned this Cawl person;he may supposed to be mechanicus, but who knows primarchs better than anyone else???

He survived the process of holding the Throne while Big E went onto Horus' ship to get mortally wounded because of COURSE you hold back against your chaos-infused asshat civil war-startin' son.
When Big E's idiot ass was dragged back to Terra and the Throne, Malcador was still alive, but barely - holding the Throne is an arduous task.
But with Big E unconscious and Malcador getting slowly fried from within by the power needed to HODOR, Malcador realized that the Emperor was about to Croak and needed to be alive and figuring gak out more than Malcador, so he spent the very last ounce of his lifeforce to revive Big E.
In doing so, dude crumbled to dust. Malcador doesn't half-ass gak, apparently.

Commander of the Mysterious 2nd Legion

course this may be changed as apparently the emperor as of "master of mankind" can waltz around freely so long as he's willing to sacrifice a thousand psykers a day to the throne.

Malcador is one of the most awesome characters of 30k. He created the Administratum, the officio assasinorum and is the one who hid the Grey knights (and may or may not have been the driving force in their creation since the Emperor wanted to hide the existance of chaos instead of combating it).
We also don't really know anything about him except his achievements, his death and that he was best bro with the Emperor. It also seems he's the only character to defy the Emperor without getting punished for it, like when he sends a execution task force to assasinate Horus in contrast to the Emperors orders.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary. |
