MANCHESTER

I have been toying with a few ideas recently on a new project to start, all of which would be rather large scale.

In the end I decided I would like to go into building a Minotaurs army built around a detachment with a twist.

With the Minotaurs obviously based upon Ancient Greek aesthetics I really want to reflect that inspiration in the force by representation of a hoplite wall.

I would want to have multiple units all armed with shields and spears, completely removing the ranged weaponry from the majority of the army. Obviously this wouldn't accurately reflect the fluff but I can't help but feel that it'd be incredible to look at. After a few weeks looking at different options I have identified where I want to source hoplite shields and spears from and even some corinthian helmets.

The question is how to make this work on the tabletop? I understand it is going to be far from a competitive force but I would like to at least be able to make it work reasonably effectively in battle. I originally had the idea to run a first co. tak force of multiple units of Vanguard vets without jump packs with counts as thunder hammers and storm shields but this would make 5 guys more expensive than terminators with the same loadout. I'm wondering now if anyone else has any ideas of how to run a large number (at least 40, more likely 60 will be made) power armour marines with shields and spears.

thanks everyone

You will have to use the Horus Heresy legion list. It will give you plenty of options. Siege marines will be a great match both rule and fluffwise.

Yeah double checked and indeed breacher squads which can be used as compulsory troops have shields. Not stormshield caliber shields though. Only 6++/5++(in h2h). HQ's can take shields as well. If you use imperial fist rules you can also get storm shields for terminators.

That would give you plenty of cheap shield troops. Not sure about efficiency though(also the boarding shields, being at best in h2h, are bit odd for generally shooty imperial fists)

'Straya... Mate.

I think it would suit them great, but would probably work better as terminators with SS/TH (converted to look like a spear).

Just be careful though, remember that the chapter operated as a whole, and is strangely strictly codex adherent.
