Well, this is a project that's been floating in my head since 2009 or so. I've always loved the concept of the Flayed Ones, and they also were one of my favorite units in Dawn of War.
I got 10 Necron Warriors (*ahem, like years ago*) and converted them into Flayed Ones. I know there are stock Flayed Ones, but there are a lot of problems with them to my thinking. For one, some of the strips of flesh look like they came off a roll of that tape you use when you twist your ankle, and others seem to have these giant swathes of skin.
Where did they get a giant patch of skin that large, Andre the Giant?
I do
love that mouth though.
Beyond that, there is something downright goofy about almost all of them, they're all posed oddly or doing something bizarre:
.
WHEEEEEEEEE!!!
I did a lot of googling of this kind of conversion and one thing that struck me is that the green stuff flesh is usually much thicker than I'd like. What I wanted to try doing was rolling it super thin, and making it look tattered. I think this worked out OK, although it was a huge pain in the ass to work with this way. Additionally I'm not sure I used enough skin.
So, first I created a pair of claw blade hands out of styrene for the blades and the little knuckles, and some pinning rod the the pistons on the backs of the hands. I didn't want to make 20 of these, so I made a single pair and then recast them 9 times.
Next I came up with an alternate rear half of the Necron Warrior torso, with longer, spikier spine and reproduced that 7 or so times. I added some spikes to the shoulder blades of some - the spikes were cut off a Dark Eldar weapon, I don't know exactly which one.
I also sealed up the mouth on a warrior head with greenstuff, made a cast of it (so it was now mouthless) and tried to carve the mouth I liked into some of them:
Some got devil horns, cause it felt right:
And one guy got a spike mohawk:
Here's a group view:
Here's rear view, showing skin and spikes:
Here are all 10 of them. The bases all have nickels glued inside them, if you were wondering - the running ones especially were very wobbly.
I had fun doing the conversions, but wish I had given them a little more skin. Also that I had used a darker wash, but we're not going back now. All in all, though, I am happy with how they came out.
