Subject: Alpha Legion Army Lists [3000 CotH + 3500 PotL]

Hey-o, I've got a couple army lists I've been pondering, thought I'd throw them up here and see what suggestions people might have, and which one people might prefer (if anyone develops such a preference!).
Here's the first one....
The Fifth Column
Alpha Legion (Traitors)
Right of War: Pride of the Legion
LoW: Alpharius = 415
HQ: Armillus Dynat = 200
HQ: Saboteur (AA, Combi-Melta, Power Dagger, LC, Refractor Field) = 140
HQ: Vigilator (AA, Melta Bombs) = 100
Elites: Rapier Weapons Battery (3 Laser Destroyer Arrays) = 165
Troops: Lernaean Terminator Squad (4 with Power Fists, Harrower with Chainfist, Power Dagger, Venomsphere Harness) in Dreadclaw Drop Pod = 385
Troops: Lernaean Terminator Squad (4 with Power Fists, Harrower with Chainfist, Power Dagger, Venomsphere Harness) in Dreadclaw Drop Pod = 385
Troops: Tactical Support Squad (9 with Volkite Calivers, Sergeant with AA, Melta Bombs) in Rhino (MM) = 290
Troops: Tactical Support Squad (9 with Volkite Calivers, Sergeant with AA, Melta Bombs) in Rhino (MM) = 290
Troops: Tactical Support Squad (8 with Plasmaguns, Sergeant with AA, Melta Bombs) = 295
FA: Anvillus Dreadclaw Drop Pod = 115
FA: Seeker Squad (7 Seekers with Nuncio-Vox, Strike Leader with AA, Power Dagger, Power Fist) in Land Raider Proteus (Explorator Augury Web, Armoured Ceramite) = 505
HS: Sicaran Venator Tank Destroyer (Armoured Ceramite, Dozer Blade) = 215
Army Total = 3500
Armillus rides with the Plasma Support Squad in the FA Anvillus, Vigilator deploys with the Rapiers to give them Scout and Stealth (maybe occasionally sneaking into the enemy DZ for that Armillus bonus). Alpharius can pop up just about anywhere, depending on the circumstances, or may even just start on the board with a Volkite squad or maybe even the Rapiers (after which he would just split off and go hunt vulnerable units). Which Dreadclaws come in depend on whether there's a unit that the Plasma squad absolutely needs to obliterate Turn 1 (if they're coming on immediately for a kill, Alpharius is obviously not in hiding). Rhinos just try to be too much of a threat to ignore after the Volkites get into a good spot; I wasn't super worried about their mobility as they won't be carrying much very far, mostly providing a box for their squads to hide in if I go second and there's an imminent threat, so I skimped on the Blades.
...
Alright, here's the second list!
The Coiled Column
Alpha Legion (Traitors)
Right of War: Coils of the Hydra
LoW: Alpharius = 415
HQ: Armillus Dynat = 200
HQ: Saboteur (AA, Combi-Melta, Power Dagger, LC, Refractor Field) = 140
HQ: Damocles Command Rhino = 100
Elites: Lernaean Terminator Squad (4 with Power Fists, Harrower with Chainfist, Power Dagger, Venomsphere Harness) in Dreadclaw Drop Pod = 385
Elites:Techmarine (Power Dagger, Thunder Hammer, Rad Grenades) = 65
Elites: Rewards of Treason (6 Invictarus Suzerain) in Land Raider Proteus (Explorator Augury Web, Armoured Ceramite, Dozer Blade) = 480
Troops: Assault Squad (9 Marines with 2 Power Axes, Sergeant with AA, Combat Shield, Power Dagger, Power Fist) = 228
Troops: Tactical Squad (9 Marines with Vexilla, Sergeant with AA, Melta Bombs) in Rhino (MM, Dozer Blades) = 205
Troops: Tactical Squad (9 Marines with Vexilla, Sergeant with AA, Melta Bombs) in Rhino (MM, Dozer Blades) = 205
Troops: Tactical Support Squad (8 with Plasmaguns, Sergeant with AA, Melta Bombs) in Rhino (MM)= 345
FA: Anvillus Dreadclaw Drop Pod = 115
FA: Anvillus Dreadclaw Drop Pod = 115
Army Total = 3000
For this one, Armillus again rides a Dreadclaw with Plasmas, and the Suzerain ride the other Dreadclaw with the Techmarine. Damocles prevents scatter and adds more Reserves manipulation with the RoW, Augury Web, and Alpharius. Alpharius can go with the Suzerain in their Dreadclaw, or hide with the Assault Squad or some other spot. The Plasma Squad Rhino here is doing much the same thing as the Volkite ones from the first list, just running around trying to be a nuisance and distraction.

Alpharius is that guy at the FLGS that just got his first 'Start Collecting' box fully assembled, and Guilliman's the guy that's been playing since the 90's. When Alpharius started doing well, Guilliman said he didn't play a 'real army' and started screaming about how he sucked. Then Alpharius tabled him. |

Coils list is super weak with no real heavy firepower and that single land raider will evaporate in one turn given the point level. You are spending way too much on characters in general.
Pride of the Legion is bad for Alpha Legion because that's potentially 3 VPs you are losing. List also overspends on the wrong things. You have 2 chainfists, Alpharius and a Venators for anti armor. At 3000 points. Good luck.

We've got a pretty small group where I play, less than 10 players total, and basically everyone is just getting started. I'm not too worried about getting overloaded on the Armour front for quite awhile. Common opponents: Death Guard, Night Lords, Ultramarines. In any case: I'm not seeing a real dearth of Anti-Armour in the Pride list, not to the degree you're insinuating, anyway-- 2 Chainfists, Alpharius, and a Venator, yes, and as well I have the Rapiers, all the melta bombs and power fists, and a Saboteur, and everything benefits from Dynat's bonus to Damage rolls. Does every single vehicle in my opponent's list need to die turn one, from Fellblades down to Rhinos? Back to the first point, I won't be playing any Armoured Spearheads or Breakthroughs for awhile, because no one's close to that sort of investment in their army yet. The most anyone's got right now is a Typhon and a Spartan and a couple other smaller tanks. Things like Sicarans can be handled by Plasma and other non-dedicated-AT, as well. Seems to me I have plenty of options on the AT front, honestly. Is there something specific you've in mind when you say "Good luck"? The Coils list does feel underpowered, I agree; I've had some trouble putting together a list I really like with all it's restrictions. We don't (or, I should say, my friends won't, heh!) allow Alpha Legion units to take Infiltrate through Mutable Tactics and become retroactively legal choices for the Coils' restrictions; it's really not how the wording works, so it's not how we do it. Really restricts the way you can take these units! As to Pride's risking too many VP's with Alpha Legion, yeah, it's an issue. I've got all my infantry model's hands magnetized so I can swap weapons out, which means the Volkite guys can become Tac Squads or Legion Vets in a hurry; I could go to Primarch's Chosen, take Vets, drop the Vigilator, move Lernaeans to Elites. Or I could do other things. Any specific ideas?
