So i decided that I want to try my hand on making a display base but couldnt find any corkwood in hometown. So I decided to try to use bark from a birch tree that I got from the lumber Ive chopped up and so far it is looking decent to me. Also couldnt find any proper sand so had to get it from gravel bag that is used to "sanding" the ice. Here's what I got so far. All feedback and tips are more than welcome.

Here is the assembled piece before sand.

And with the sand.

Cedar bark chips works well. Huge bags are available from landscape stores.

Okay, need to go check out if we have that stuff here in Finland.

On the other note here's the progress of the base and to be honest Im quite happy how it turned out. This was first ever base Ive done. Comments and critique is always welcome.

I use charcoal after it's been used in a grill. The cooked up coal bricks crumble fairly easily in your hand into a lot of nice odd rock shapes. You get a lot of different sizes with a lot of neat shapes. Once it's PVA glues down and primed it paints up real nice.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

If you're asking me then I have no idea. I applied some watered down pvaglue on top of it before I started painting. Guess time will tell.
