Hi All

Sorry for the noob question, but how many points is an Ork Big Shoota worth? is it 11 or 12?
It seems to me as though the Codex is slightly ambiguous as to whether you upgrade:
A Boy into a Big Shoota which would be 11 points
Or whether you upgrade a Shoota Boy into a Big Shoota which would be 12 points.

Please help

The unit options for a big shoota require a model to replace its ranged weapon. A slugga, which Boyz come with by default, is a ranged weapon, so there is no need to upgrade to a shoota first.

Unless you would like the rest of the unit to be armed with shootas, in which case you are required to replace the entire mob's sluggas with shootas, which you can't do if one model already has a big shoota instead of a slugga.

Yes so the Shoota Boys would be 182 points (26x7), Big Shootas 33 points (3x11) and the Boss Nob would of course depend on his weapons.

Yes so the Shoota Boys would be 182 points (26x7), Big Shootas 33 points (3x11) and the Boss Nob would of course depend on his weapons.

There are 30 models in the unit so you pay for all 30 to be upgraded to shootas

A model with big shoota in a slugga & choppa unit costs 11 points, in a shoota unit costs 12.

You can have 26 shootas, 3 big shootas and a nob. You basically just have to pay 15 points more than the standard shoota mob with 29 shoota boyz and a nob.

Easier way to go for it:

30xshoota boyz=30x7 = 210(or split this into 30xboyz = 30x6 and 30xshoota upgrade=30x1=30)
3xbig shoota(3x5) = 15
1xnob with power klaw and bosspole = 10+25+5 = 40

=265

Don't bother with trying to calculate cost of individual ork. Just upgrades.

265 points is the exact cost for a unit with that loadout, you basically made a mistake in the nob cost as 18 points is the cost of a standard nob, not the cost of a boyz that is upgraded to a be nob, so you should have calculated 6 (cost of an ork boy) + 1 (cost of the shoota) + 10 (cost of the nob) + 5 (pole) + 25 (p.klaw), total 47. But easier way to calculate the total points value of a unit is the one that tneva82 suggested one post above.

Some people counts 264 because the nob can have the shoota as a free upgrade but technically you have to upgrade the entire mob from being slugga/choppa to shoota before making one of them a nob. A nob in a slugga/choppa unit can have a shoota for free but in a shoota mob you already paid the cost for the shoota so you can't substract that point in a second moment.
