I think there was a general consensus before that 40k models looked better than warhammer fantasy and in fact that was one reason why many played 40k, they just didn't like the fantasy models. But how do you think AoS models compared with 40k?

most of the new models for AoS are pretty great really, some may be a bit "overdesigned", but the quality is certainly there, if nothing else...ultimately it's a matter of personal taste though really...some people prefer the more medieval style of fantasy, some people prefer the more science fiction style of fantasy...I don't think one is "better" than the other, but I do lean more toward the science fiction side of things, I like the mix of mechanical and organic...so I prefer 40k - I still like a lot of AoS models though...to each their own.

Can I vote Pre Tomb Sphinx WHFB.
Whfb always looked great with large blocks of units crashing into each other.

Oli: Can I be an orc?
Everyone: No.
Oli: But it fits through the doors, Look!

The stormcasts are looking better with each release i must say.
However, they will never beat the classic Space Marine for me, with its unlimited customization.

The Ironjawz Megaboss i think look as good as any 40k Orks.

Love alot of the AOS Khorne miniatures, for example the Slaughterpriests. They look better then the new Kharn in my opinion.

I prefer the look of 40k simply because I can't stand the Stormcast aesthetic.

There’s a difference between having a hobby and being a narcissist.

While I absolutely prefer the gritty techno-biological look of 40k, I must say some of the new AoS models are utterly fantastic. Blood Reavers, Kairic Acolytes, Tree Revenants, Kurnoth Hunters. All of them really, really nice models

I'll even give those Stormcast dudes with big radiant wings a thumbs up because the wings are a kickass bit. Still need to get round to making a plastic Baharroth with those...

As someone who doesn't play either 40k or AoS, I can tell you that the AoS designs are really off-putting.

I think GW should buy their staff a few copies of this:

There are some nice AoS models, but on the whole the new releases are hugely unattractive to me. 40K is a bit less offensive in most cases (though you have crap like Guilliman).

There's a lot of what I like to call Post-World of Warcraft (or Post-WoW), in the AoS models, especially the Sigmarines. It's the sort of shiny, almost cartoonish, unrealistic, impractical and unhistorical aesthetic you'd expect to find in a contemporary fantasy computer game, like any Asian mmorpg, or in generic high fantasy board games, like those produced by FFG. It's the sort of aesthetic which didn't really exist before WoW, but was taken up and copied by nearly everyone else.

I absolutely detest it, in case that wasn't clear. It's cheap, easy to do and it ruins the immersion for me. I'm not saying that historical models are somehow more original, because they're not, but at least they're based on armour and equipment which makes practical sense. It makes sense for armour and weapons to have been made a specific way, just as it's obvious how certain types of fantasy armour wouldn't work or even work against the wearer.

Stormcast just fails on so many levels. I want my fantasy universes to be gritty and bloody, and Sigmarines don't deliver on that. They even fail to have personalities.

I think they need the cover of that book hanging over their desks at all times.

I actually don't see a massive difference between modern 40k and AoS as far as design goes. They're both over the top, over detailed with whacky proportions.

Old WHFB aesthetics vs 40k aesthetics, well WHFB was designed for ranked combat so models tended to look a bit more regimented, which I actually preferred.

Overall I think both 40k and AoS are a mix of modern overdetailed models and older models that haven't aged well, with a handful of models I'd actually consider "good" and the rest just being "acceptable".

I find I love Stormcast so much more when I give them bare heads from Space Marines. Gives them so much more personality.
