Witchfire powers roll To Hit if they have a weapon profile. This was cleared up in the FAQ.

I can't see anything in the BRB or FAQ that contradicts this for Beams. They are witchfire powers, so if they have a weapon profile they should roll To Hit.

Is that correct?

The power this question came up with is The Fury of the Ancients in the Librarius discipline.

The only reference I can find that directly answers this is https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Warhammer_40,000/Tactics/Psychic_101#Psychic_Disciplines. This says beams don't roll To Hit.

Does anyone have a rules reference for this?

Beams don't roll to hit, they just auto hit everything along the line.

Have a read of the Beam section again in the BRB. It tells you how you generate your hits.

Reference to back that up?

Yep, done that. I'd argue it's ambiguous:
- Nova powers say in bold letters "A nova power automatically targets and hits all enemy units". This is clear. So why does it not say that for Beams?
- Beams are witchfires. Witchfires roll To Hit if they have a profile. So why does a Beam not roll To Hit?

For the record, beams not rolling To Hit is HIWPI, but I'd like a rule reference to support that.

Was about to post about Novas, but I was mistaken.

The answer you need is page 27, paragraph 6:

"All units under the line (friend and foe) are hit,"

So, there you go. It describes a different method for hitting than rolling for Ballistic skill.

Thanks Yarium. You're so often a calm oasis of logic in the chaotic warp storm of YMDC! (@JakeSiren - I totally recognise you gave the same answer, but @Yarium's helped me out before )

I had read that paragraph, just didn't read it as a black n white 'definitely auto-hits'. Everyone else seems perfectly happy with it so I'm happy to jump aboard.

Thanks all.

Best way to think of Beams is as a special form of template. They auto-hit and can also effect friendly models/units
