Eye of Terror

Starting work on a Death Guard army. Having a little trouble getting my head around fluffy modeling options.

The goal is to have a Nurgle army where it's not hard to tell different kinds of troops from one another without losing an overall theme. The main concern is I want people to be able to tell a Plague Marine from a regular CSM. Looking for ideas / inspiration on how to differentiate between them.

Some background: this is my first time building a CSM army that is not Black Legion, but I have been using cult troops since 5th edition. Currently, I have about 35 plague marines, painted up in the standard green / silver / rust schemes of the Death Guard. I also have another 30-or-so unpainted Plague Marines in their original blister packs which I can pull out to expand that force, along with unpainted bikers / obliterators / Terminators / HQ options / CSM sprues.

The place I am getting stuck is with regular CSM troops. My original idea was to take a few sprues of stock CSMs and paint them up in Death Guard colors. I did a few test models that look a little too clean, and I realize I need to do something to make them fit with the rest of the force without going overboard.

Here is my list of modeling ideas.

- Mk III helmets

- Convert bolters / meltas / plasma guns to have wooden casings

- A few bulbous bellies, sores, and that kind of thing - but not on every model

- Put holes in some of the armor, make it look beat up

- Rust

Not sure if it's enough. I am fine with doing conversion work but it's a slow process for me and I want to have a clear concept before I get into it. Would love to hear people's thoughts / see images from more experienced Nurglers.

Sounds like a good set of ideas, let your creativity flow! You can have your plague marines look exactly however you want. I know someone who didn't like the rusty look, he painted his plague marines in pristine white and green. He modelled leaking pus and slime with green stuff trickling out of all the armour joints and eye sockets dribbling down the armour. Looked pretty impressive. Convert them as much or as little as you want.
