Hi,

I am just coming into the hobby after a long time out, and I am starting to put together my first 40k army. I have played 40k before, though I have far more experience with the Lord of the Rings games. As I have never built my own 40k army before any advice, pointers and criticisms will be much appreciated

Harald Deathwolf (190)
Wolf Guard Battle Leader- thunder hammer & runic armour (105)

10 Blood Claws (120)
10 Grey Hunters- leader with a power weapon and a wolf standard (190)
7 Grey Hunters in a drop pod- leader with a power fist and a wolf standard (197)

6 Thunderwolf Cavalry- three with storm shields, two with single wolf claw and one with power weapon (340)
4 Long Fangs- all with plasma cannon (135)
5 Wolf Guard Terminators- heavy flamer and 4 with thunder hammer and storm shied (235)

I wanted to go with a strong close combat army, however I realise my anti-tank weaponry is on the weak side but I will be looking to develop this.

Many thanks

If you're looking for a CC army, it's essential that they actually reach cc!

Land Raider would fit your theme well (personally i dont use them but yeah)

Imo go with the power fist option on a NON-character, and let that model touch base-to-base with Only what you want to die, so the model must be the first to recieve wounds, and challenges can't pull out the fist to your opposing cc specialist.

Wolf Standards are a lot of waste imo, ATSKNF is strong.

Wolf Claws on TWC are sooooo perfect! Go with TH on the character tho, S10 op.

Imo put your WGBL on a bike or TW mount so he can join the TWC, give him two FenWolves, and to Herald too (forget if you can, should if could). Those extra wounds are so handy to look out sir S10 shots too

Consider the turn by turn, will you have enough targets to absorb fire while you achieve your goals, and snobby them focusing more fragile things like the Long Fangs

I appreciate what you are saying about the Land Raider, as I expand the army I would be looking to add some form of transport to the army, undecided as to what to take yet, I can also see what you mean about the power fist.

Aren't the wolf standards worth it for the extra attacks nearby units receive?

yeah I like you're thinking here, I was planning for the WGBL to arrive in the drop pod with the smaller squad of grey hunters what do you think about that?

Thanks for that

I think a land raider is way too expensive an option and not necessarily good. I had great success with my space wolves but mostly used the mighty mighty thunderwolf cavalry to win games. These guys are lean mean killing machines!

I recommend you scrap your current force org and build a space wolves Deathpack formation with a small CAD.

The deathpack formation will give you some pretty valuable bonuses like RUN + CHARGE! which for thunderwolf cavalry is a lot of icing on the cake. The grey hunter will also benefit from the shooting bonus.

Try it out

1. Tyranids - 15,000 pts
2. Chaos Space Marines - 7,100 pts
3. Space Marines - 6,000 pts
4. Orks - 5,900 pts
5. Dark Angels - 4,300 pts
6. Necrons - 4,600 pts
7. Grey Knights - 3,200 pts
8. Eldar - 3,400 pts
9. Blood Angels - 3,200 pts
10. Chaos Daemons - 3,200 pts
11. Tau Empire - 3,000 pts
12. Space Wolves - 2,400 pts

where is the blood claws/swift claws?!?!?! these little dudes may not be the best with their weapons, but they have rage and automatically come double armed (+3 attacks on the charge). you can have 15 blood claws in one unit and 10 swift claws(blood claws on bikes) in one unit. take those and a unit of 6 thunderwolf cavalry maybe put a lord on a wolf too for some extra cheeky fun and you have the basis for a great close combat strike force.

Standards are most worthwhile if you have a way of getting them quickly to each conflict with the Standard exposed - Grey Hunters have no such method unless you're planning to use Fulmination with a Rune Priest.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.
