Good day everyone! I was hoping to get some insight as to which list you think is a.) better overall and b.) better vs. Tau. I've got a 750 pt game coming up with a buddy and he's told me he will probably be Crisis Suit heavy with possibly a Hammerhead for support. He might try Breachers but I think he'll go Fire Warriors. He also has a Riptide but I don't know if he's bringing it to this game, though I beat him in the 500 pt game we played last time so he might be out for blood. Either way, without further ado here are the two lists I'm torn between:

List 1: Decurion w/ Canoptek Harvest

Overlord w/ Nightmare Shroud
10x Warriors
10x Warriors
5x Immortals
3x Tomb Blades w/ Nebuloscopes and Shieldvanes
1x Spyder
3x Scarabs
3x Wraiths
Total: 756 (I've got the Shroud because a 2+ backed up with a 4+ RP is pretty hard to kill and he can soak wounds for a warrior squad. Alternatively, I could swap the Shroud for a Warscythe and put Whip Coils on the Wraiths. What do you think?)

List 2: CAD

Cryptek
10x Warriors
10x Warriors
1x Ghost Ark
3x Tomb Blades w/ Nebuloscopes and Shieldvanes
3x Wraiths w/ 2x Whip Coils
2x Destroyers
1x Heavy Destroyer
Total: 751 (I don't have my codex on me and I don't remember if Destroyers have a minimum squad size or not. if they do, then the Heavy Destroyer will just go into that squad to bring it up to 3)

Thank you for your consideration. All comments are appreciated!

List 1. The formation will make the list strong enough to take out Tau at that point level. Go with that one.

1. Tyranids - 15,000 pts
2. Chaos Space Marines - 7,100 pts
3. Space Marines - 6,000 pts
4. Orks - 5,900 pts
5. Dark Angels - 4,300 pts
6. Necrons - 4,600 pts
7. Grey Knights - 3,200 pts
8. Eldar - 3,400 pts
9. Blood Angels - 3,200 pts
10. Chaos Daemons - 3,200 pts
11. Tau Empire - 3,000 pts
12. Space Wolves - 2,400 pts

Both list are over 750 pts so you either tell your friend and see if he is okay with that or you will have to make it 750 or lower.

Your Decurion looks sound. Will probably have to either get rid of the Shield Vans or Nebulscopes from your Tomb Blades if you want to be 750pts not 756pts.

Your CAD is fine as well. I would bring immortals over warriors though because they are better overall and are cheaper (interms of basic cost for the unit). Your Destroyers can have a Heavy Destroyer but only one. However, fielding them separately is probably better because you can have the H.Destroyer on his own doing his own thing or you can have him follow the 2 normal Destroyers and do what you intended. Or, you could field 2 H.Destroyers in one unit and do massive damage!

Cryptek w/ Phase Shifter and Staff of Light

6 Priarch Praetorians w/ Rod of Covenant

5 Immortals w/ Gauss Blaster

10 Warriors in Ghost ark (or you could drop a Pretorian and put them in a Night scythe for basically deep strike deployment and use the TWL Tesla Destructors. On a 6 to hit you get 2 extra hits so 1 hit becomes 3 )

3 Tomb Blades w/ Nebuloscope and Shield Vanes

2 Heavy Destroyers

Total: 744pts

Phase Shifter gives the Cryptek a 4+ invul save and with 4+ Reanimation he will basically have a better chance at survival. Staff of light is free so might as weel bring it.

I put him with the immortals (or warriors if you put them in the nightscythe giving you 11 units with 4+ reanimation behind your friends Tau). Gives them a 4+ reanimation so they will be that much tougher.

The Praetorians are Jump Infantry so they can move 12 inches like the Wraiths and they basically have the same wounds as 3 wraiths have 6 W between them and 6 Praetorians have 6 W. Also the Rod is an AP 2 weapon meaning that anything in combat is basically dropping and it can shoot as well (could put these with the cryptek for 4+ reanimation if you dont mind having them move only 6 inches).

2 Heavy Destroyers would be perfect if your friend brings any Vechiles as 2 Strength 9 AP2 weapons will have a good chance at stopping them from being a threat.

Seems like the consensus is that both lists are decent but maybe Decurion is a bit stronger. I couldn't decide between being more durable ala the Decurion or bringing in more toys ala the CAD. I know at 750 it doesn't make much of a difference but I was just looking for any pointers. I've only gotten back into 40k recently (last two months or so) after a several year hiatus and picked up Necrons because I'm a whiny CSM player who was tired of being beaten like the red-headed step child of a rented mule. I've heard the Decurion is monstrous; this will be my first game with it.

As far as points, we've always played with a 5 point or so swing at any given level so that shouldn't be much of an issue. I like your list and I've heard that Praetorians are pretty good but I don't own any of them I'm afraid.

Do you really feel that Immortals are better. I've done some math comparing the two and they do actually come out cheaper per point per damage output on pretty much all targets, but you do lose out on a lot of bodies and they can't benefit from the Ghost Ark. Though I am a CSM player from way back and I do loves me some 3+ armor.

Well Decurion does mean more survival which helps a lot but with a CAD you can bring more units and have less restriction. also, crons are pretty pretty tough so they should last till the game ends.

Well if you and your friends have a 5 point swing then everything is okay and you can bring anything you want. When I started Necrons I was playing a lot of Tau too. they are a good army to understand shooting and all the basic rules.

Well for me I use my Immortals to get objectives or to add extra fire because there weapons are generally better and do more damage. You may have 5 less models but the 45 extra points can be spent on War Gear, A different HQ.. etc

In regards to the Preatorians, I would ask your friend is it okay if you use a different model and use them as Praetorians (Six warriors acting as Praetorians) just so you can test the unit out in case you want to get them IRL.

Best of luck in your game, use whatever list you think is the most fun.

My ancient "lab"

Definitely the Decurion. Makes your guys very hard to kill, and has other goodies. I wouldn't worry about whip coils, cause if you even get into CC with tau, you've already won(unless he's an enclaves player). As for immos v. Praetorians, i've always favored the immortals, and the tau AS doesn't come to mind right now, but they're low enough I think to justify tesla carbines.
