My FLGS is starting an escalation campaign tomorrow, using the Planetary Empire tiles. It starts at 500 points and builds up over time.

Rules
- 500 points to begin with, with a 5 point lee-way.
- 1 HQ and 2 Troops compulsory, with 1 Elite choice optional.
- No Monstrous Creatures or vehicles that aren't Dedicated Transports.
- No upgrades besides those that are compulsory (such as Daemon Prince marks) or ones which are free.

With this in mind I'm choosing which army to pick. I tried a 500 point Guard list which failed miserably against Tyranids due to the lack of stopping power in my Lasguns.

Which list would be best?

500pt Night Lords
HQ
- Sorceror

Elites
- 5x Chosen
- Rhino

Troops
- 14x Cultists

- 10x Chaos Marines

- 5x Chaos Marines
- Rhino

500pt Red Scorpions
HQ
- Librarian

Elites
5x Sternguard Veterans

Troops
- 10x Marines
- Apothecary

- 7x Marines
- Apothecary

- 6x Marines
- Apothecary

500pt Grey Knights
HQ
- Librarian

Elites
- Paladin Squad

Troops
- 5x Grey Knights

- 5x Grey Knights

Given the restrictions you have listed only your GK army is valid. Too many troops in the other two lists and the Scorpions have a non-dedicated transport vehicle

I should have clarified, it's 2 Troops minimum. Good spot on the Dreadnought however, I'll have to edit that.

Since this is an escalation league I assume you'll be getting a point increase from time to time. Based on that assumption and the restrictions listed I'd stick with GK.

Although you said you gave up on IG based on a bad game against a couple of FMCs? If anything I think IG has the best answer to FMCs - hydras! Two of those would make for a miserable day for nid central. Then take a blob with a lascannon or two with a couple of psykers and fish for a 4+ save. Maybe two more units of conscripts running around the board to hold objectives. I don't play IG a lot anymore but I think you can pull all of that off with 500pts. Just a thought.

Strike that - the rules say no monstrous creatures which you would think would make nids difficult to play in general. If nothing was flying I'd switch the hydras to wyverns...lots of wyverns...

While Grey Knights are one of my favorite armies, I'd recommend against them if that "no monstrous creatures" rule is gonna stay in effect the whole way through. Dreadknights are usually the backbone of our forces without ally shenanigans.

I don't really know anything about the other two.

I agree the loss of dreadknights makes me sad but what's good for the goose...

What are you left with (even going forward) everyone has the potential of wielding a force weapon (it's ap3 in cc anyway), two-shot assault boltguns, potential for S5 cc attacks, level 1 psyker. What's not to love? Down the road you have access to landraiders as points permit. Does anyone get to take a stormraven as a dedicated transport? But I agree the loss of the dreadknight does make one take pause...

One of the other two armies are CSM and they need a crutch in the form of a GMC of some sort. SM would be fine especially when you start ramping on the grav
