Rules situation that I'm pondering.

The FAQ is clear about IC's and infiltration. You can't do it unless the IC has infiltrate.

BUT. The wording in the FAQ is very clear. What if it's a non-IC character who joins a squad, specifically a Corsair Baron joining a Ghostwalker squad. Most of you might not have that book, so I'll break it down.

He's an HQ choice, and during deployment, must be assigned to a Troops or an Elites. Ghostwalkers are Troops and are the equivalent of Craftworld Rangers. After that, he cannot leave the squad and remains with them (think IG commissar).

So... is it legal to infiltrate him, since he's not actually an IC?

The Corsair Baron is assigned to the unit at the start of the game, not during deployment.

The start of the game happens after deployment, so by the time the Corsair Baron can be assigned it is too late to benefit from Infiltrate.

So. You deploy everything, and then at the start of the game suddenly add the boron(s) to their squads?

The rules say they must be assigned at the start of the game. There are several references in the rulebook to events which happen after deployment but before the game begins, so necessarily the start of the game must be after deployment.

I guess I'm confused. Nothing is stopping him from being in the squad. Whether I assign him during deployment or "at the start of the game" makes no difference.

The timing doesn't matter. Your still thinking as if he's an IC, which is understandable.

It makes a lot of difference. Once assigned to the squad he cannot leave so we conclude he is part of the unit.

Infiltrate applies to a unit containing at least one model with the rule, which Ghostwalkers qualify as.

If he were assigned at deployment, or say during list building, you could claim he is part of the unit and therefore able to Infiltrate as part of the unit.

Being assigned at the start of the game however, the Ghostwalkers will have already Infiltrated and the Baron will have been deployed within your deployment zone, not being part of the Ghostwalker unit during deployment so therefore not eligible to Infiltrate with them.

I suppose you could still assign him to the Ghostwalkers unit but then you would simply be forced to attempt to regain unit coherency, which I expect would be counterproductive.

As I see it, he's not being deployed (your words, not mine. Well, FW's words, anyways... He's assigned at the start of the game, not during deployment, hence not being deployed). Infiltrate, per page 167, happens during deployment).

This is going to be a nightmare to argue at a GT, and frankly, I doubt many TO's would waste the time to actually look at the rules or make an informed decision.

I'll just scrap the idea. Thanks for your time, cheers.
