Hi

Hopefully this is the right place as this doesn't fit until the army lists as it's not related to a particular points cost.

I'm interested in building up my tyranid army and making them more competitive. As you can see from some of my models it's been a long time.

Curious as to what units I should be looking at? Everyone seems to run flyrants these days.

Model wise interested in getting some venomthropes. Otherwise open to suggestions.

Units I own

Hive tyrant
- barbed strangler

Lictor x1

1x gargoyle brood

3x termagaunt broods
-mix weapons

2x hormagaunt broods

24 genestealers

1x broodlord/ patriarch

3x raveners

3x broods tyranid warriors
- mix bone swords, venom cannons

2x tyrant guard models

Just bought trygon prime as model looked good!

2x carnifex, old screamer killer and old one eye

1x biovore

Appreciate any help.

Thanks in advance

It depends what kind of list you are wanting to buy. Unfortunately, Tyranids do not have the luxury of having multiple playstyles from a competitive standing.

If you want something fun and balanced, then Venomthropes might well be a good investment. You already have a very large ground element and Shrouding them is always going to help.
Alternatively, you could look into Zoanthrope for increased Synpase presence and some decent psychic firepower.
Or, you could really branch out and grab a Malanthrope from Forge World. This is a fantastic beasty that offers a tremendous amount of support at rock-bottom points cost.

If you are more into winning, then the strength of a Tyranid army is directly proportional to the number of Flyrants it contains. Unfortunately the advice is to simply start spamming out Flyrants along with the minimum investment of Mucolid Spores to 'unlock' them.
Many players build their army like this, simply cramming as many in as possible until they hit the point cap. Needless to say this can be unfulfilling from a hobby point-of-view.

Finally, you could take the fun-and-fluffy approach by picking up some Genestealer Cult allies. The Deathwatch Overkill boxed set is a great way to get some boots on the ground and they massively expand the number of things you can do with the army.
Any of the Hybrid units are great, for different things. I'd strongly consider getting a hold of the Codex to see what they can do for you.

Amazing,

Thanks so much for the reply. Tyranid codex has so much more in than before and was a bit of a whirlwind getting my head around it. Appreciate your input. Will check out the malanthrope

I recommend between 1-2 Mawlocs in your list, they became significantly cheaper in the last codex and are overall great units.

If you had to buy a unit now, then i would say a flyrant or 2, maybe a mawloc also, but if you can wait, i'd wait for 8th so you know what you are getting into, at least base rule wise.

Definately couple of flyrants with 2x twin devourer and mawloc or 2. Also lictors can add your potential on striking with mawloc at right spot.

Flyrants, mawlocs. For sure in a more competetive setting. However, would anyone also recommend some living artillery? I was thinking about a couple of Biovores and an Exocrine myself, with a bunch of spore mines floating around performing a little board control.
