Talons of the Emperor drops soon and I was curious of how good do you think they'll be and based on what we've seen so far with the SoS and LC's do you think they'll be efficient on their own?

proably not as they won't have much anti-armor.

They're also painfully slow, reliant on Land Raiders for mobility.
They remind me of 5th ed Deathwing lists - Terminators, Dreads and Land Raiders. But without the CMLs

I mean, they can Deep Strike. I'd say they can put a fun fight in a casual context on their own, but if you're taking them against competitive lists you'll probably want allies.
Allying in Imperial Knights and Sisters of Silence seems like a good way to cover your bases. Alternatively, go the opposite route and load up with a Librarius Conclave, using the Custodes as the backbone of a deathstar.

Yeah I feel like they have a chance to be downright nasty, but it would take a lot for that to happen like two librarians joining the army and the LR to cart them around.

I have played 5 games over the weekend using custodes and have been doing great with them. The build is very deathstar-ish though.
First off i thought of using a bunker + escape hatch. That way they can jump out 6 inches away from the opponents deployment zone turn 2. Seems to work pretty well but the buker only houses 20 (and custodes are Bulky)
The newer build uses a blob of 10 custodes (add a vexilla!), celestine, an inquisitor with rad grenades and the Liber Heresius and a Priest. The inquisitor lets the blob scout move up the board a bit. The priest gives all the custodes reroll saves in combat. You could somehow add a BA sanguinary priest to get a turn of 4+ FNP (celestine boosts their FNP as they are troops). Its a huge blo, very difficult to deal with and will do pretty great in combat. Celestine can give the entire unit rerolls to hit (zealot, again from her blessings) and if the combat gets a bit stale you hit and run 3d6 out of it.
You can easily get all the IC's you need by using the Castellans of the Imperium detachment, and te respawning troops do great around the unit.

I thought about doing a small Allied Detatchment with Valdus in the HQ slot. So for 755 pts. I'd run Valdus, a unit of Custodes with 2 stormshields and a LR as a deathstar. The rest of my 1500pt team would be Deathwatch drop pods going wherever and the deathstar pushing forward. This is for a doubles game so I don't really need to worry for lack of bodies since my partner is running a Ynnari jetbike list. The question is what would I run for Valdus Librarius, Biomancy, or Telepathy?
