I've been thinking of creating "platters" for when I use my imperial guard foot troops or tyranids - either oval "platters" or round "platters", with cut-out spaces to put figures in (either 5 or 10 per base, somewhat irregularly spaced - like the 5 pip on a D6).

Has anyone else done this? Have you run into opponents who give you grief about using this method to move troops?

Do you think it'd be worth it for 5-man squad armies, like marines?

I'm thinking something like this, but capable of holding ten figures...

Well one problem would be terrain. Not very feasible on heavily terrained board so like useless on our boards.

Maybe do 5-man ones anyway? That way fitting them on smaller area would be easier as if part of the group has to fit where base doesn't fit you can just move those models out of base rather than all.

I am personally not a fan of them... But there are some who are

Palying Nids and GSC I tend to hug terrain fair bit, which is why I wouldn't want to use them..

But KDK or SW Wolf lists running across a open board without a care they could make use of it
