So my SW codex arrived today, for my second army. Having never played against wolves, i was interested...and i like dogs.
My main idea for the list would be a fast attack harass for my opponent to focus on instead of the 4 leman russes i have in my list to make the whole list 1850 points.

Originally i wanted Bjorn but the amount of points is impossible! so i went with a low cost HQ and more troops.

Battle leader
-runic Armour
-2 wolves
91
Grey hunters x7
-flamer
103
Grey hunters X5
-1 flamers
75
Lone wolf
-wolves
36
Thunder wolf cavalry
-frost sword
-frost axe
-thunder hammer
190

Any feedback on:
low cost lists for SW,
any knowledge on is this list legal as an allied detachment,
and if it does fit under 500 points just to be sure,
would be greatly accepted! Thanks!

All you need for allies is an HQ and one troop choice, so I would drop one of the Grey Hunter squads to add storm shields and/or an extra thunderwolf to your TWC squad. Without a good invuln they will die pretty easily.

I would also recommend trying to find the points to put your WGBL on a thunderwolf mount and include him in your TWC squad as well, solid guy to tank wounds at the front with runic armor and a storm shield.

i couldn't find a way without changing the melee weapons on the cav to add the storm shield to the WGBL but here is the changed list
Battle leader
-runic armour
-2 wolves
-thunderwolf cav mount
141
Grey hunters *5
-1 flamers
75
Lone wolf –
-wolves
36
Thunder wolf cavalry
-frost sword
-frost axe
-thunder hammer
Storm shields
235

What's the lone wolf going to do? Is the plan to have him run alongside the grey hunters with the wolves as a cheap meat-shield?

Don't get me wrong - I like the fact it's fluffy to have him in there. However, he costs half of the grey hunter squad. Maybe a rhino for the grey hunters would be more practical to allow them to zoom onto objectives while your opponent shoots at the slavering thunderwolves heading towards him?

Don't let me put you off though. I'm building up some lone wolves in terminator armour at the moment. Would they be optimal? Nah! Is it a great excuse for a badass terminator model that will be great fun to paint? Yup!

Ill be honest, I dont know.... I'm guessing its my inner guard player wanting to have more units on the table, plus I love the idea of the fenrisian wolves and want to have as many as possible (this is why I dont want to take out the ones with the battle leader. If I were remove the lone hunter, would it be more beneficial to have 2 more GH

I would be tempted to do that. Depends if you need more coverage from units or if the main force they will be allied with can do that.

Formation detachment -> Deathpack

Minimum
1 Wolf Lord
1 unit TWC
1 unit Grey Hunters

For Glory, For Russ!
The Wolf Lord and any units from the same deathpack within 12" of him can either shoot and re-roll to hit rolls of 1 or run and still be able to charge.

My favorite set-up

Wolf Lord
-> Thunderwolf
-> Runic Armour
-> Frost Sword

TWC
Leader
-> Storm Shield
-> Bolt Pistol
Cav1
-> Storm Shield
-> Bolt Pistol
Cav2
-> Storm Shield
-> Thunder Hammer

Grey Hunters
4x Bolter Hunters
1x Flamer Hunter
Drop Pod

Comes in at 500 points exactly, can bust out first turn charges.

Oh, you get the models and the rules in the Start Collecting! Space Wolves box set - everything but the Drop Pod and Flamer.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

This list looks good, but from what I can tell I would need to buy another wolf lord on a thunderwolf as the one in the start collecting doesn't come with one? Am I correct here because if not, this is a cheap list to buy.

Yes, you'd need to buy him too.
Sorry mate, forgot all about him.

Thats fine, he was on my 'to buy' list anyway, may drop the drop pod though, ive never liked them being used and much prefer other transports - like rhinos and chimeras

Yeah, when you only have four guys that the re-rolls matter to you're probably better off trucking them up.
I run two Dreads in pods, the extra one lets me use the Drop Pod Assault rule to round up and drop two pods in my opponent's face on the first turn.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.
