So, since the Black Guardian War Walkers can come in from reserves without scattering and take up an Elite slot rather than a Heavy slot, have they become a more worthwhile choice in a Ynnari army? I'm considering buying a couple of them and setting them up like an anti air/artillery battery that can be brought in as needed (based on dice rolls). Granted, the rest of my army is made up of jet bikes, skimmers, and jump infantry, but I think the War Walkers might have a solid place in that army.

What do all of the Ynnari players out there think?

Thanks

They are fine in a Black guardians army, but for Ynnari they dont get the full benefit of the Soulburst rules.

Point for Point tho there are better points, but its not always "I play what is better" you can play what you like, I have 2 of them that I play with time to time.

Put it this way, they are to weak for power gaming, perfect for friendly games, and they are ok for semi-comp.

With that sad if you ever play FW rules they are very fun in Corsairs. Still not top a tier unit, but more fun

I think 4 War Walkers or 4 Vypers in an Ulthwe Strike Force is actually a great addition to a Ynnari army. They will be a separate detachment, but since vehicles do not get to Soulburst anyway, they lose nothing (but gain plenty) from being in the USF.

Being able to drop them in on Turn 1 can be an effective Alpha strike. It you have other fast units, you can drop them where you want, but make sure 2-3 Ynnari units can move within 7" of each one. Most opponents will see the immediate threat of the vehicles and the relative ease they can be killed and try to dispatch them. When they die, you get to Soulburst 2 units.
If the opponent realizes this is your tactic, they may chose to ignore the WWs/Vypers. Either way is a benefit to you.

Soulburst only effects non vehicle units, since War Walkers are vehicles, they don't benefit from soulburst. Put them in a Black Guardian detachment, and they can keep Battle Focus. Anything they kill will still trigger soulburst in models that have that ability.

USF only makes them a better glass cannon than before... like dropping them behind a tank and shoot at the rear armor. If thats the case, black guardian scatbikes will do just the same but can jink and assault jump away and turbo boost to safety next turn if they are still alive. AND most important of all, the scatbikes will benefit from soul burst.

Scatbikes is more competitive all the way

What I have thought is that you can deepstrike out of LOS against armies like Tau and avoid intercept, then battle focus and shoot stuff up. I will certainly give them a try in a list like this.

It seems to me that there might be some confusion in this thread.
If you take Black Guardians in the USF, they will not have Soulburst (so the earlier comment about Scatbikes benefitting vs War Walkers is irrelevant). Scatterbikes are good in either the USF or Reborn Host. WWs are better in the USF.

Deep Striking into Rear Armour AND staying 9" away from enemy models is unlikely to happen. I really wish people would stop saying this as if it were guaranteed.
It is more likely side armour, which WWs were alreadly doing with Outflank

The reason you take WWs in the USF is 2 fold.
1) As Capamaru mentions about, WWs in a USF keep their Battle Focus, so you drop out of LoS against interceptors and BF into LoS to shoot and
2) since Vehicles do not benefit from Soulbursts anyway, you get more out of WWs in the USF.
3) Coming in turn 1 instead of 2
Plus you can use them as Soulburst bait by dropping them close enough for 2-3 Ynnari units to move close to them.

Most opponents will have a hard choice between shooting the "easy to kill", high firepower WW or not because it will grant a Soulburst for 1-2 units near it.

Personally, though, I prefer Vypers in a USF. They are cheaper than a WW and a 4+ Jink is usually better than a 5++
And since WWs have Scout (Outflank) they have no issue getting where they want to be. Vypers are actually made useable in the USF. And they can keep up better with the Windriders in my Reborn Host.
I drop 1-2 Vypers into side armour, or get the opponents attention by killing half a Marine squad (I use Starcannon + Shuricannon). Then I'll move 2-3 Scatterbike units near them.
A smart opponent will try to kill the bikes first (of which will trigger a Soulburst in the other units) However, many oppoents will see the dangerous Vypers that just popped out of nowhere and have AP2 guns and are easier to kill than the bikes, so they will shoot them first. I'll Jink to force them to dedicate more firepower on the Vypers, but once they die, bingo! Soulburst city.

Yeah I just noticed USF is not one of the eligible Reborn Host formations. Regardless BG scatbikes are still better than WWs and I also would take Vypers over WWs.

The usf might not be a reborn formation, but the black guardians and ww's are still available as elite choices, you lose battle focus and 1st Turn Web way deployment, but you still retain the no-scatter deepstrike ..........

I'm going to try a unit of them in a Reborn Warhost in a tourney this week. I like the idea of a reserve unit with 6 scatter lasers precision deep striking behind enemy lines on turn 2 or 3. Wish they could keep battle focus, though.

Be care thinking that you can "get behind enemy lines". Usually armies will still have units in their deployment zone and if that zone is 12" of the table edge, you may not be able to fit them back there and still maintain 9" away from those enemy units.

This is why "aiming" for rear armour shots is unlikely. Side Armour all day, but you'd have to be playing a noob to get reliable rear armour. Or you are being "that guy" by not clearly stating what your units can do from the beginning.
