I've got the headband magnifier. It's helpful. An illuminated standing magnifier is probably better, but costs quite a bit more.

I have tried several different methods.
I have a desk top magnifying glass/lamp, I use it mainly as a light however and only occasionally look through it when wanting to inspect something up close. I've tried painting whilst using it but it mucks up my depth perception and I either splodge the paint brush against the model or miss entirely.
I also own a couple of sets of the magnifiers with crocodile clips and stand. I have similar problems as above but also find that unless I hold the unit close to my eyes whilst painting it's too far away sitting on a desk to work with whilst painting. And it's a bit heavy to hold for long periods of time.
The cheapest and most basic method is also the one that works best for me, cheap 99p shop reading glasses. Still not perfect and as someone who doesn't usually use glasses this method can sometimes cause me headaches.
I've never tried the head lamp as my other half would laugh at me.

I've been playing a while, my first model was a lead marine and my first White Dwarf was bound with staples

Welcome to Dakka

How about a set of "reading glasses" ? like they sell at 99% of the drug store chains... I bought a pair of 3.5X and love them. Not to bulky, my wife doesn't look at me funny (well not as bad as some of the other looks I get)
Cheap....

Just tried reading glasses today, oddly enough. My other half cleaned them for me. They did give me a headache, but I imagine you get used to them.
