Just like any beat'em'up game on your console or at the arcades we all know that using combos is the best way to make the opponent's life bar disappear., so to in Warhammer 40k,

Fielding an army of marines formed of two or more factions, so allowing the marine player to capitalise on tactical doctrines is a key against any sophisticated enemy.

Except that you're most likely then unable to field Battle Company, which is by far the strongest formation SM have access to.

Ultramarines BC or White Scars BC are the two most powerful SM builds. You gain little by splitting Chapters (although an argument can be made for fielding Tigurius as part of a Librarius Conclave).

I disagree, I see several CAD's plus formations focusing on the strenghts of different factions very effective. E.g. Ravern Guard to hold enemy up in assault, Imperial Fists for tank hunter devs, Ultras for versatility.....

In My Lab

Right, except you're paying a LOT of tax for them. At a bare minimum, you're looking at around 175 points for two bare-bones scout squads and an un-upgraded Librarian or similar.

That's 10% of your list right there in a 1500 point game, and 9.5% in an 1850 game.

Of course, Scouts are good, and so are Librarians... With upgrades. Making them more expensive.

In addition, putting any IC with the wrong chapter completely nullifies your bonuses.

You can make a case for the fist of medusa strike force. You can get a deathstar that doesnt need psychic powers
