Hey everyone I am interested in getting into 40K what would you all recommend for getting started in the table top game? Also if I want to learn more about the lore what books should I get?

I have only ever read one book, the NightLords Omnibus. Awesome. Wish i had read it much sooner. The Night Lords are the VIII legion of the Emperor, fallen from grace 10,000 years ago and marauding the stars. Sweet! I love my Night Lords.

Also, as for getting into the game, the Games-workshop website has tons of pictures of the models. Take a gander. Whatever ones seem the most awesome.

If you want to be immediately able to compete, three armies are sort of at the apex of the Power curve: White Scars Battle Companies which spam Gravitic Weapons, Eldar with Jetbikes and a WraithKnight; or the Tau Empire using three Riptide Battlesuits as the core of your army.

Other big winners? The Chaos Daemons are a popular one, especially Tzeentch Deamons.

Hope that helped.

Humble bundle has a Horus heresy deal going on so you can get a few books for a dollar if your looking to read up on the setting, it would all be before 40k but has a lot of info. Also I would look through the start collecting bundles and look into the factions you think look cool, they are a pretty good start.

There is a three book bundle that has the rules, fluff, etc... included. You could do worse than starting with the Horus heresy novels for story. My personal favorites are the grey knights omnibus, the space wolf Omnibus, and the tanith first and only series.

You might also look on eBay for old, out of date books. The rulebooks and codexes have lots of good lore and art in them, and people often sell them off really cheap as the rules are no longer valid.

To get started, you might also try Shadow War: Armageddon with a friend. It'll be a gentle introduction to the game. With 8th edition on the horizon, rumored as early as July, it might not be best to invest too heavily in any one thing, also.

true allot of videos I watched recommended picking a faction then get the codex and rules. I was just curious if that was a valid rule book to get a feeling for the rules. Hoping to break some of it down instead of buying it all at once. I was thinking Space wolfs or Salamanders

Get this instead.
Not that particular one but yea, the dark vengeance mini rulebook. The one you linked is the 5th edition book.
I'm not sure it's a good idea to put too much stock into those july rumours mind you. If it happens, great, otherwise, whatever.

A cheap set of rules can also be gotten from the Kill Team boxset. It's the full set of 40k rules for much less than DV and comes with actual complete sets (as opposed to snap-fit models with pre-set loadouts). As a bonus the set also comes with the rules for the specific models in a specific loadout, so you can get on playing without a codex.

The only problem is that the two factions are normal marines and tau, so it may not be the factions you want.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

To start off, i recommend getting Kill-Team, it has a Tau Firewarrior Team and Space Marine Tactical Squad. It also includes a Mini-Rulebook so you can start playing straight away with a friend.

I started with models I bought from a veteran in a hobby shop.
Years later, I got other people into the hobby that way too.
These days, I would start by looking at the GW website,
finding models that I like (try to imagine these without their fantastic paint jobs, as you will be painting them!)
and then I would look for these and other similar things on ebay
to get an idea about what is available for what, how much, and so on.
I would go to the local hobby shop, or ask someone who is into the game to borrow a codex and rulebook.
If not the codex that I want, it will give an idea of how an army is assembled.
Then, I would think about those units that I liked from the GW site,
the available used/ebay/discount models,
and finally according to my budget I would start collecting from there.

From GW and available now,
the Burning of Prospero box seems to be the best bet if you want to do anything marines.
I would otherwise hold off on buying into any 7th edition rules, unless you get a deal on a boxed set that contains the small rulebook.
