Finally caved yesterday after being aware of 40k for years, and decided to buy the Start Collecting Chaos Marines box set. I had to have the store order a codex, so i'm waiting on that, and I'm probably going to wait to buy the rulebook until the new edition comes out. I had a few questions mostly about painting and codices.

1. I think I want a army of Plague Marines (or whatever the Nurgle guys are collectively called). Can all/most Chaos units be used for any of the sub-factions? Would they just be painted to reflect allegiance along with maybe a few unique models? I know that GW sells "Plague Marines" , but it doesn't look like there are many Nurgle specific ones.

2. If the Marines I bought are usable, do they count as entirely different infantry under the same army? As in, even though the grunts are in a Nurgle army, they aren't technically Plague Marines?

3. Do I actually need two codices? I saw the Traitor Legions one, and I'm under the assumption that I would need to get that one as well, but even if I decided to go with non-nurgle guys, do I still need to get the Traitor Legions book?

4. Does it actually matter what color they are painted as long as I make it clear what they are? For example, could I paint Space Marines to look like Stormtroopers?

1) Death Guard are the Nurgle Legion. Any unit in the Chaos Marine Codex except for those with a Mark of Khorne, Slaanesh or Tzeentch can be part of a Death Guard detachment.

2) Plague Marines are a specific Elite unit choice, they can be taken in any Chaos Marine army (they class as a Troop choice in a Death Guard detachment). The guys in the Start Collecting box would class as Death Guard Marines if you ran them in a Death Guard detachment which gives them some boosts they don't normally have, otherwise they are just Chaos Space Marines.

3) You need the Chaos Space Marine codex and the Traitor Legions supplement. Death Guard are getting new releases soon though so new units will likely be in a new supplement/ campaign style book (Terminators, some sort of cultists/zombies and the Daemon Primarch Mortarion).

4) Colour doesn't matter at all. Some people might turn their noses up but that's just the way they are. Death Guard legion colour is all white anyway with green shoulder pads so you wont be far off from the original.

Welcome to the fold of Chaos! I will help you with any questions you may have. Make sure you have Khorneflakes for breakfast, or you will not have enough nutrition for a full day's murder and mutilation!

The new Death Guard stuff is going to be amazing, so keep your ear to the ground for the release date!

Yeah if you do choose to go for the traitor legion Death Guard ruote..

Everything you have purchased so far should be good.

The Deathguard rules are mainly that you can only take mark of Nurgle, and everything that can take it have to.

But you get some sweet sweet bonuses for it.

Plus as mentioned new Death Guard models are out soon

1. Plague marines are currently the only nurgle specific unit. There is a miniature for a daemon prince but that's just cosmetic.
As other have already said though, we are going to get more nurgle specific models soon.

2. Not sure what you mean. Plague marines are a specific unit. You might be confusing them with Death guard.
Death Guard being the nurgle legion, plague marines being a unit withing that legion. Although not necessarily limited to them.
Chaos space marines don't become plague marines, but they have options to be dedicated to nurgle (or other gods). Same with most units. Like the prince, hence the model.

3. I would HIGHLY suggest getting the legion supplement, regardless of what type of csm army you want to play.
Even if you don't want to play a legion I would still get it and just use the legion that fits your playstyle the most.

4. So long as the colour scheme doesn't confuse your opponent your good. They are your marines after all.
Like say you use all khorne berzerker models for your nurgle army. That would raise some eyebrows, so have an explanation ready in that case.
but yea, basically anything goes.

Thank you that was exactly the info I was looking for.

You got it. I was asking if I was using standard chaos marines in a Death Guard army, if they would then be considered plague marines, soldiers that are just dedicated to the deity, or incompatible.

So when they release new models do they typically release a whole new codex, or do they just put up the new rules online?

They may not do any new rules, for them.. as Traitor legions only just came out, But if they Release Mortian with them.. they will get a small one

Trying to think did Wreath of Magnus get any extra formations that didn't carry over to Traitor Legions? (not including Deamon and/or Imp)

well apparently the rumored stuff are plastic plague marines and "plague termies" so I suspect they'll get a new decurion style formation to make use of it. much like how ultramarines got something that was basicly a tuned gladius that allowed em to take Gulliman

So I got the codex today. Was hoping that I would be able to buy stuff based on that alone, but it seems like I should probably at least look at the rulebook. Even though the new edition is rumored to come out soon, would it be worth it to get a Dark Vengeance set and sell the models that come with it to get a cheap rulebook? Because my other questions would probably be answered by that. I don't really want to buy a book that will be outdated by the time I actually start playing, but at the same time I want to put the stuff I have together, and get all the stuff I want so I can start as soon as the new edition comes.

Go reverse. Go on eBay and get yourself a mini rulebook and the CSM from the set you're interested in.

Here's to me in my sober mood,
When I ramble, sit, and think.
Here's to me in my drunken mood,
When I gamble, sin, and drink.
And when my days are over,
And from this world I pass,
I hope they bury me upside down,
So the world can kiss my ass!

Nobody knows when the new edition is coming, could be months, could be another year.
