I started recently on a new Necron Destroyer Lord as I managed to lose the one I had. Just nowhere to be found, super annoying.

Any way, for inspiration, I like the way this one looks like he is slowly descending over some boulders or rocks, onto his enemies:

And this image often pops up in necron destroyer lord google searches, not sure where he comes from, but I like the way he has vulgarly over done the shoulder armor, and in general his evil pose:

So a combination of the two. So I planned to model some small rocky landscape on the destroyer base, which is quite large, and have it slowly descend down.

At first I started working on the base, picking bits from an old what's-it-called (the thing you put under kettles when you put them on the table)

I have used PVA glue to assemble the "rocks" to compose this thing, and drizzled small pebble/rocks to add detail.

As for weapons I want it to have a warscythe in one hand, and an orb in his other hand. Holding an orb in general looks good, has a sort of royal look to it.

The default left hand on destroyers is empty, but looks a bit wonky. I cut it up to realign it and put a greenstuff orb in it:

As for the warscythe, my last spare had two hands on it, so I cut away the section with the left hand on it and added small section of polystyrene rods to fill the gap

There is a brass pin in the center of the white section to add better support

I hope the low grip of the remaining right hand will still look ok when the model is completed

I decided to magnetize the body to make traveling easier

There is one bigger magnet (1/8"x1/16") to make it stick, and one smaller magnet 2mmx1mm to make it not spin

Automatically Appended Next Post:
To magnetize the base, I took a piece of sprue, added magnets to match those on the body, and drilled a hole through it for a pin, then gently glued the pin into the base at an angle I thought would be right.

Then some more rock to hide the magnetinstallation.

Looks good so far:

Very nice !!

I like the way you hide the magnets

Thanks!

Next up is the body. I wanted to mimic the second picture up there, ie enhance the shoulder armor and the back spine.

My approach here was to cut polystyrene sheets into pieces that would then go on the shoulder armor and on the spinal things along his back.

At first I cut templates from cardboard to see what would fit and look ok, I ended up with what you see on this picture. The bits I ended up using are marked with blue circles:

Looks pretty good though if you can find them

the old metal wraith has a far closer looking shoulders and pose.

then again its metal so it might be bad for balance lol

I agree.. that thing in plastic would have been awesome to use for this project.

Also balance wouldn't be too bad, the base I'm building is pretty heavy, and its really wide, so would probably be quite sturdy

So I created the polystyrene items and added them:

I created a necron punk rocker!

Not quite happy with the result, I'll try to extend the shoulder armor elements forward a bit.

I added extensions to the collar, and a small edge on top for some extra detail.

It's definitely an improvement, but with the destroyer torso being what it is, it's probably hard to make something that resembles that image in top. shoulders are too small and to round, would need something like that wraith or a household object that contains that shape (I have been looking).

Looking good!

The computer-drawn second image in the OP is from the Dawn of War computer game.

Thanks. I'm starting to look forward to seeing this thing with paint on it.

Next up is the right arm. I have a bunch of left over arms from various Necron kits, but I went with the original destroyer left arm, and its different. The hand is much bigger than the one currently resting on the warscythe I have prepared, and the arm is thicker. I have the upper right arm that usually connects to the gauss cannon. It even has a power chord or something attached to it, now I just needed the lower part of the right arm. Any existing arms I have left are too small and would probably look awkward in comparison to the left arm, so I tried to create one, using two polystyrene rods and greenstuff for muscle, or living metal which I guess they have there now.

This is what I ended up with:

Looks like a juicy piece of steak, but I think it might work. Once I have the rest of the arm ready I can see how it works and re-do it if need be.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Next I tried to increase the size of the hand. The left hand, now holding an orb, is big and ghostly. The hand currently on the warscythe is small and cute in comparison. I tried just to model a new hand on top of the existing features:

Looks like a Hulk experiment gone horrendously wrong, but hopefully with paint this will be a so small detail on the final miniature that it won't catch the eye too fast.

These last two bits are definitely not the best looking custom parts of this conversion, but I still think that an ugly arm will be better than a too small arm

All parts put together, the model ended up like this:

(click for a larger image)

I extended the warscythe so that the grip would be more in the middle (using the rod inside a hyperphase sword)

Something feels not quite right with the angles of the head, body and warscythe arm. I got a little impatient and glued the body and left arm before the warscythe arm was ready, which limited my options for good looking angles for that arm. Also I struggled to find a good angle to photograph it. This may all get better once painted. So over to the paint shed next.

This project isn't dead, Easter holiday with family duties and recently moving to a new house has disrupted the miniature workflow (don't have any good place to spray prime models for example), but I will soon be up and running again.

I have added wires and cables and machinery to the torso, better photos and paint will fly in his direction soon:
