Have previously worked with Tamiya clear red on my CSM over gold, but to be honest they were configured to be easy to paint, here I'm trying something a bit more detailed and would welcome thoughts, ideas, comments and random abuse...

Forgeworld Mk III Techmarine, red is Tamiya clear airbrushed over a silver base over a black primer. Silver started gun metal and worked through to Aluminium, a few edge highlights in Chrome added with a brush - I was trying to do a bit of a pre-shade, it sort of worked but not as well as I wanted.

Thinking a pin wash of brown into the recessed areas to put a bit of definition back and tone the glossy effect down in the recessed areas, thoughts?

White on the gun is GW colours and needs a bit more work to smooth it out, Silvers are also GW, essentially finished, ditto the golds but wondering on a further highlight as an extreme edge effect?

Mechanicus emblem is the darker GW gold triple, seems ok but needs more highlighting to go (third colour not yet added)

Skin tones are Vallejo tan - dwarf flesh - elf flesh, planning an ink wash then further highlight just to blend it all a bit more, won't be trying to paint eyes though.

Wasn't convinced on the chrome highlight on the red edges, but it seems to look ok in the pics and its growing on me.

Q: the axe needs some sort of 'power' effect, but utterly clueless on this or what colours would work here without looking silly

Q: would some sort of weathered/chipped yellow/black stripe detail on the claw be too much or a benefit here?

Overall thoughts?

Enjoyed building the guy, start hopefully of a Thousand Sons 30k era force as a slow burn project, just like the basic colours but want to improve as the models are worth the effort.

Many thanks

Further thoughts.

Working on this dude

Trying to decide what colour to do the scrollwork, e.g. the bits highlighted below.

the models have white on them already, but a grey/cold white - not sure if the parchment type colour would work. thoughts?

1st Tactical Squad

10x MkIII Tactical Marines

So far only the Sergeant/Aspiring Sorcerer has the final highlighting on the red

Close up on the Sergeant

No markings yet applied as I've not fully decided how I want to do that, Likely to be a fellowship marking assigned which goes under the decals so waiting for a while as yet.

Obviously there bases not completed either

Gained a second unit, Tataros Terminators in a pretty basic load out.

As with my MkIII only the sergeant is currently sporting the silver highlight layer.

Not decided how to do a 'power' effect on the swords as yet so they are also pretty plain and currently no decals while I work out what to do with them

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Further, a couple of quick & dirty bits of eBay salvage to provide a few vehicles

Mk1 Predator

Mk1 Rhino

Ok neither of them will raise any quality bars but hopefully not lowering them too much for somewhat old models

Update time

Tartaros Terminators, now finished

Decals went on easily enough, there are some runes on the sheet that may go on a couple of these as well.

Tactical Squad (there are two of these)

Now with decals added which really make them look crisp

Command models

Ahriman the I just get these headaches

Everyone!

They look nice, how did you do your red?

Red is pretty simple, airbrushed but you could brush it (though not on vehicles, tried that and its rubbish)

1. Prime black
2. Zenith highlight, gun metal from vertical down to about 80 degrees, leaves black on the very undersides
3. Zenith highlight, aluminium from vertical down to about 45 degrees, leaves the gun metal on lower surfaces
4. Zenith highlight, Chrome, directly above only, light burst of this.
5. Tamiya clear red, slightly thinned with Tamiya thinners (about 1 part thinner to 9 parts paint), two thinks coats until the red is where you want it.

Done.

trick is leave the silver to cure for a couple of hours before putting the red on, then leave the red overnight - it goes touch dry quickly but will take a fingerprint for a few hours.

any highlighting on the red is done with chrome and a brush before the red goes on.

Final edge highlight is a GW silver, something steel IIRC

Red is left very glossy, but looks ok with a matt coat over it as well, glossy enough to take a decal well.

With the airbrush the actual human (or leopard) effort is about five minutes for a squad of ten models from grey plastic to glossy red - the rest of the time is waiting for it to cure.

You can brush the red, but its likely three or four coats and takes an age, if I was brushing would go for a red pigment into silver.
